Ammon Bundy and the myth of the American West

On Marrying the Wrong Person | The Book of Life
One: We don't understand ourselves
Two: We don't understand other people
Three: We aren't used to being happy
Four: Being single is so awful
Five: Instinct has too much prestige
Six: We don't go to Schools of Love
Seven: We want to freeze happiness
Eight: We believe we are special
Nine: We want to stop thinking about Love

From Two: "We don’t see this as a picture of someone who has no nostrils, eight strands of hair and no eyelashes. Without even noticing that we are doing it, we fill in the missing parts. Our brains are primed to take tiny visual hints and construct entire figures from them – and we do the same when it comes to the character of our prospective spouse. We are – much more than we give ourselves credit for, and to our great cost – inveterate artists of elaboration. The level of knowledge we need for a marriage to work is higher than our society is prepared to countenance, recognise and accommodate for – and therefore our social practices around getting married are deeply wrong."
From Nine: "there is as much doubt, hope, fear, rejection and betrayal in a marriage as there is in single life. It’s only from the outside that a marriage looks peaceful, uneventful and nicely boring."  tip  list  life  relationship  marriage  commitment  emotion  neurosis  partner  couple  mismatch  pessimism  self-esteem  self-help  psychology  romanticism  romance  medieval  illusion  intimacy  avoidance  character  writing  perfectionism  projection  personality  happiness  community  kibbutz  sex  loneliness  2010s  15th_century  20th_century  21st_century  rational  business  instinct  impressionism  art  impermanence  trauma  youtube  the_school_of_life  the_book_of_life  video

The Sugar Wars: Science’s Fierce, Geeky Debate Over Soda | The Awl
"It's a tempting scenario: much as one might gut the worldwide prevalence of lung cancer by targeting tobacco, one might arrest and reverse ballooning obesity trends by indicting sugared drinks.

"But things are not quite as simple as a media meme or a political trend, otherwise why would the Obesity Society stage such a debate or, indeed, an entire conference wherein soda was, at best, a minor player in a complex drama of cause and effect?"
"Moreover, as the economic historian John Komlos has pointed out, it's a mistake to think that obesity suddenly arrived in America as a problem in the 1980s. If you looked at historical data for Body Mass Index (BMI—a proxy measure for fat), Americans started putting on the pounds in the 1920s and piling them on in the 50s and 60s. It just looked like the obesity epidemic struck in the 80s because that's when the BMI threshold for defining obesity was crossed by a mass of people who had been gradually putting on the pounds year after year."
"The casual way autonomy can be overturned by rhetorical claims to public health has the power to drive people potty. As the philosopher-turned-financier Michael Shaoul noted in a 1992 PhD thesis, the emergence of credit in the 1980s had a profound effect on identity, greatly accelerating the transformation whereby people stopped thinking of themselves as being solely defined by their labor in a particular workplace and began to think of themselves as consumers. ... Public health experts have a tendency to think of the consumer as someone who is consuming the wrong things because they lack the right kind of knowledge or incentive to consume the right things or because an industry has successfully persuaded them to consume the wrong things. But when everyone sees their social role as, fundamentally, being a consumer, there is little transactional difference between a beverage company or a fast-food restaurant and a public health department.

"This is something that struck me, as a non-scientist, throughout the conference: there was very little room in the "Harvard" conception of public health for the idea of pleasure as a "good"—as something the consumer values, wants, identifies with, and should be at liberty to pursue even at a personal risk to health."

Taibbi on Bill Moyers vs. Bill O'Reilly | Common Dreams
"O'Reilly bashed PBS for funding lefty agitators like Bill Moyers. "Here's what we get – a $16 trillion debt, and we've gotta pay for Bill Moyers," O'Reilly boomed. He also at one point held up a flash card with a picture of Moyers, along with the headline, "Why is NPR getting our money?"

There were only two problems with O'Reilly's argument:

1) Bill Moyers doesn't work for NPR, and never has.

2) Bill Moyers doesn't receive any money from PBS. His show is entirely self-supported by donors. If anything, Moyers supports public television."

Emily Witt · Diary: Online Dating · LRB 25 October 2012
"OK Cupid gave the almost awe-inspiring impression of Kremen’s dream database: unlimited choice. There are drawbacks to this. As the sociologist Eva Illouz writes in Cold Intimacies, ‘the experience of romantic love is related to an economy of scarcity, which in turn enables novelty and excitement.’ In contrast, ‘the spirit presiding over the internet is that of an economy of abundance, where the self must choose and maximise its options and is forced to use techniques of cost-benefit and efficiency.’ At first it was exciting but after a couple of months the cracks began to show. What Beauman says about our inability to gauge what might be attractive turned out to be true."
"Internet dating alerted me to the fact that our notions of human behaviour and achievement, expressed in the agglomerative text of hundreds of internet dating profiles, are all much the same and therefore boring and not a good way to attract other people. The body, I also learned, is not a secondary entity. The mind contains very few truths that the body withholds. There is little of import in an encounter between two bodies that would fail to be revealed rather quickly. Until the bodies are introduced, seduction is only provisional."

The Amanda Palmer Kickstarter Scandal : The New Yorker
"The outrage over this incident is, however, more complicated than it might at first appear. It’s entangled with the current debate about wealth inequality that has animated both the Occupy movement and the Presidential campaigns: the sense that even newly minted haves, like Amanda Palmer, really need to treat have-nots, such as local musicians, a whole lot better. Thus a long-standing music-biz scam (Chuck Berry’s ill use of local musicians is the stuff of industry legend) suddenly takes on the aspect of plutocrat and prole in a contemporary drama. It only adds piquancy that Palmer adopted the posture of the moustache-twirling boss. As she told the New York Times, 'If my fans are happy and my audience is happy and the musicians on stage are happy, where’s the problem?'"
"In general, there is a boom in such practices that seems tied to the digital era; you can't spell Internet without intern."
"As a society, we’re supposedly committed to the principle that workers, the poor, those struggling to get by, deserve a share of the wealth for practicing their craft. But we also believe that investors and owners deserve returns on their equity. What we gloss over is the irresolvable contradiction between those two things. In general, the Amanda Palmer investor will in fact be in favor of paying the musician in hugs, since that would maximize their own return: intensified exploitation of the string section should lead to more hand-knitted cassette tapes showing up in the mailboxes of the twenty-four thousand eight hundred and eighty-three backers who ponied up."

Gender Knot Revised Ed: Unraveling Our Patriarchal Legacy - Allan Johnson - Google Books
"When men feel inconsequential, it’s easier to blame women than it is to confront patriarchy - the true source of the diminishment and lack of meaning in so many men’s lives. When men feel unloved and disconnected, it’s easier to accuse women of not loving them well enough than it is to consider men’s own alienation from life. It’s easier to think of women as keeping men from the essence of their own lives than it is to see how men’s participation in patriarchy can suffocate and kill the life within themselves. It’s easier to theorize about powerful, devouring mothers than to confront the reality of patriarchy.

"Beneath the massive denial of men’s power and responsibility and its projection onto women is an enormous pool of rage, resentment, and fear. Rather than look at patriarchy and their place within it, many men will beat, rape, torture, murder, and oppress women, children, and one another. They will wage mindless war and offer themselves up for the slaughter, chain themselves to jobs and work themselves to numbed exhaustion as if their lives had no value or meaning beyond controlling or being controlled or defending against control, and content themselves with half-lives of confused, lost deprivation. What men lack, women didn’t take from them, and it isn’t up to women to give it back."

If a Clown : The New Yorker
If then the clown said to you
that he was on his way to a kid’s
birthday party, his car had broken down,
and he needed a ride, would you give
him one? Or would the connection
between the comic and the appalling,
as it pertained to clowns, be suddenly so clear
that you’d be paralyzed by it?
And if you were the clown, and my friend

a sad face, and with an enormous finger
wipe away an imaginary tear? How far
would you trust your art?

Voter Harassment, Circa 2012 -
"True the Vote grew out of a Tea Party group in Texas, the King Street Patriots, with the assistance of Americans for Prosperity, a group founded by the Koch brothers that works to elect conservative Republicans. It has developed its own software to check voter registration lists against driver’s license and property records. Those kinds of database matches are notoriously unreliable because names and addresses are often slightly different in various databases, but the group uses this technique to challenge more voters.
"The Voting Rights Act of 1965 prohibits intimidation or interference in the act of voting, but the penalties are fairly light. Many states have tougher laws, but they won’t work unless law enforcement officials use them to crack down on the illegal activities — handed down from Jim Crow days — of True the Vote and similar groups. "Political partisans can debate the role of government in fixing health care, but for either public or private approaches to work, transparency is the crucial prerequisite. To make transparency effective, government must play a role in making fair and accurate reports available to the public. Twitter Ordered to Release OWS Protester's Data or Be Fined for Contempt | Threat Level |
"The court ordered Twitter to release the data or hand over its confidential earnings statements from the last two quarters so the court can determine how much of a fine to levy against the company.
"Twitter wrote that Harris’ tweets are protected by the Fourth Amendment “because the government admits that it cannot publicly access them, thus establishing that Defendant maintains a reasonable expectation of privacy in his communications.” The Twitter accounts in question have been closed and are no longer publicly available.

"But even if Harris’ tweets were publicly available, Twitter points out that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that “public information which would allow law enforcement to draw mere inferences about a citizen’s thoughts and associations are entitled to Constitutional protection, thus establishing that a citizen’s substantive communications are certainly entitled to the same protection.”"

How did you find your passion? - career work motivation | Ask MetaFilter

2. I've realized that I won't be happy unless I'm doing X for a living.
3. Are there any jobs that will allow me to do X as I've defined it? (Or that will let me gradually work towards a pure version of X?)
4. If not, then I need to either brainstorm other ways I could be happy (compromised X? doing X as a hobby?) or resign myself to unhappiness.
5. If so, then I need to make sure that I can live with non-X aspects of the job. (Wow! I can do full time, paid theatre, but I'd have to work with the dreaded Mr. Y!)

The Denial of Racism: Remembering the Woman Who Set Herself Alight | Clutch Magazine
"In the absence of “factual references” and “citations” to back up our experiences of racism, they are seemingly without merit. Western societies have been (mis)educated to believe that racism is strictly overt behavior, with manifestations that should be quite evident. In this era of “take our country back,” the denial of racism is ever more embedded in commonsense notions (aka: prove it beyond all doubt, or quit whining). The racism that we experience, “day after day,” as Delvaux-Mufu put it, is not about extreme incidents. Indeed, it often concerns mundane practices that are difficult to pinpoint.
...As such, experiences of racism never make the standard of unequivocal fact, and as a consequence, our racialized realities are repeatedly downplayed or simply dismissed."

Reporting Poverty, Emily Brennan interviews Katherine Boo - Guernica / A Magazine of Art & Politics
"The hope is for the reader to engage with them as individuals and see how these people really do get around social obstacles, when there is a limited distribution of opportunities, when there are institutional problems, be it police corruption or poor public hospitals and schools. I don’t think readers will get invested in what potential is being squandered if they don’t engage with the people in the story as individuals. When you have a kid who is killed, I want the reader to feel what I felt and what the people of Annawadi felt, and because of that, get involved in the problems of criminal or social justice."

"Often the people who have the most verbal dexterity have had some amount of education in their lives, and you don’t want to limit your reporting to just those people. You take a kid like Sunil, the young scavenger, he’s been raising himself, so conducting long interviews and eliciting illustrative anecdotes was out of the question. When I started spending time with him, it became clear that Sunil had an extremely strong aesthetic sense that helped him through life. Moments of natural beauty were very important to him."
"We take stories and purvey them to people with money. And in the conventions of my profession, which I try to adhere to, we can’t pay people for stories. Anyone with a conscience who does this work grapples with that reality, and if they don’t, I’d worry... But if writing about people who are not yourself is illegitimate, then the only legitimate work is autobiography; and as a reader and a citizen, I don’t want to live in that world. Because if you take a kid like Sunil, who’s been denied the possibility of an education that allows him to write his own story, and all of the people who lack the means and access to do so, they go down the memory hole. They’re lost. What it comes down to is, the only thing worse than being a poverty reporter is if no one ever wrote about it at all."

Greed and Debt: The True Story of Mitt Romney and Bain Capital | Politics News | Rolling Stone
"Mitt Romney, it turns out, is the perfect frontman for Wall Street's greed revolution. He's not a two-bit, shifty-eyed huckster like Lloyd Blankfein. He's not a sighing, eye-rolling, arrogant jerkwad like Jamie Dimon. But Mitt believes the same things those guys believe: He's been right with them on the front lines of the financialization revolution, a decades-long campaign in which the old, simple, let's-make-stuff-and-sell-it manufacturing economy was replaced with a new, highly complex, let's-take-stuff-and-trash-it financial economy. Instead of cars and airplanes, we built swaps, CDOs and other toxic financial products. Instead of building new companies from the ground up, we took out massive bank loans and used them to acquire existing firms, liquidating every asset in sight and leaving the target companies holding the note."
"Not that Romney hasn't done just fine at milking the government when it suits his purposes, the most obvious instance being the incredible $1.5 billion in aid he siphoned out of the U.S. Treasury as head of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake – a sum greater than all federal spending for the previous seven U.S. Olympic games combined. Romney, the supposed fiscal conservative, blew through an average of $625,000 in taxpayer money per athlete – an astounding increase of 5,582 percent over the $11,000 average at the 1984 games in Los Angeles. In 1993, right as he was preparing to run for the Senate, Romney also engineered a government deal worth at least $10 million for Bain's consulting firm, when it was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy...
"But the way Romney most directly owes his success to the government is through the structure of the tax code. The entire business of leveraged buyouts wouldn't be possible without a provision in the federal code that allows companies like Bain to deduct the interest on the debt they use to acquire and loot their targets. This is the same universally beloved tax deduction you can use to write off your mortgage interest payments, so tampering with it is considered political suicide – it's been called the "third rail of tax reform." So the Romney who routinely rails against the national debt as some kind of child-killing "mortgage" is the same man who spent decades exploiting a tax deduction specifically designed for mortgage holders in order to bilk every dollar he could out of U.S. businesses before burning them to the ground."
thinkin bout dunkin:
"In 2010, a year after the last round of Hertz layoffs, Carlyle teamed up with Bain to take $500 million out of another takeover target: the parent company of Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins. Dunkin' had to take out a $1.25 billion loan to pay a dividend to its new private equity owners. So think of this the next time you go to Dunkin' Donuts for a cup of coffee: A small cup of joe costs about $1.69 in most outlets, which means that for years to come, Dunkin' Donuts will have to sell about 2,011,834 small coffees every month – about $3.4 million – just to meet the interest payments on the loan it took out to pay Bain and Carlyle their little one-time dividend. And that doesn't include the principal on the loan, or the additional millions in debt that Dunkin' has to pay every year to get out from under the $2.4 billion in debt it's now saddled with after having the privilege of being taken over – with borrowed money – by the firm that Romney built."

Why I Love Marilynne Robinson : The New Yorker
"'On some impulse, plain exuberance, I suppose, the fellow jumped up and caught hold of a branch, and a storm of luminous water came pouring down on the two of them, and they laughed and took off running, the girl sweeping water off her hair and her dress as if she were a little bit disgusted, but she wasn’t. It was a beautiful thing to see, like something from a myth. I don’t know why I thought of that now, except perhaps because it is easy to believe in such moments that water was made primarily for blessing, and only secondarily for growing vegetables or doing the wash.'

Hear, All Ye People; Hearken, O Earth (Part One) -
"Since the advent of typewriters (from John J. Pratt’s pterotype in the 1860s to word processors in the 1980s), few people write by hand anymore, and we now have a vast array of typefaces available to us. It is an easy matter to change an entire document from Bembo to Garamond to Caslon to Palatino. We forget that written manuscripts, letters and journals were once unique objects often containing clues about the writer and the context of when and how they were written.

"Can we separate the form of the writing from its content?"

Tiger Beatdown › Lives worth living: Disability, abortion, and slipshod ethics
"Inevitably, the fact that it’s possible to test for many common disabilities means that abortion for disability is going to come up as a topic. This is a fraught ethical subject, and it’s fraught in no small part because of the social devaluation of disability. On the right, people with disabilities are fetishised as tools and instruments to a larger end; conservatives make sweeping statements about ‘respecting life’ when it comes to fetuses who might be born with disabilities, though of course they do nothing to support those fetuses once they’re born. This rhetoric does not allow room for the fundamental humanity of people with disabilities. Meanwhile, the left treats us like we don’t exist and aren’t a part of society, and don’t belong in society, frequently advancing arguments like Sierra’s: that abortion for disability is, quote, ‘a positive moral choice.‘
"What I am pushing for is disability as a value-neutral status that individual disabled people, not the people around them, get to make of what they will. Maybe that means celebrating your amazing body. Maybe that means corrective surgery. Maybe that means something else entirely."

The Official Guide to Legitimate Rape: myriad: The real goal of the...
"The real goal of the "forcible" rape clause: conservatives are looking at the end game. They envision a time when abortion is illegal in all states, except in cases of rape, incest, or life of the mother. If a rape has to be "forcible" to count, women will have to provide proof that they were forced: bruising, trauma, injury. Since a woman won't know she's pregnant until weeks after the rape, she'll have to have gathered that proof (like a rape kit with photos) at time of conception. This will effectively block all but the most proactive victims of violent rape from receiving abortions.

"The "legitimate" rape idea is even worse: if you're pregnant, it wasn't actually rape, therefore, no abortion!"

| on turning 39 and the qualia of consciousness/ problem of war
"People think of PTSD as something men get from war, but it is also a thing women get from living as women which is also war. And it would be easier and more political if all the events of living as a woman which threatened my survival were merely socially constructed, but some of it was just so biological. Then the biological met the political. The social and the political and the biological met the economic. It sometimes met the legal, sometimes the bill collectors. There was the violent and the violent was always a result of the romantic. The romantic felt biological, and often resulted in the reproductive. The reproductive is war and against-war.
"It’s yet another error in perception of the affluent that those with social protection can look at those who have, at times lacked it, and imagine that weakness is in the bleeder, not those who have never bled."

An Interview With Caitlin Moran | The Hairpin
"This whole sassiness thing – everything's got to be sarcastic, everything's got to be knowing, everything's got to be cynical. You've got to be on top of your shit twenty-four hours a day. THAT is exhausting. It's just far better to go, you know what? I'm just basically a monkey in a dress, and the best I can hope for every day is just to be nice, to smile as much as possible, to be gentle, try and be a bit understanding, work really hard, go and smell some flowers, have a cup of tea, ring your mum if you get on with her, just kind of dial it down a bit. There's a more sustainable idea of being a woman rather than feeling like you're in a fucking movie twenty-four hours a day."

Pinterest, Tumblr and the Trouble With ‘Curation’ -
"“Curation” does imply something far more deliberate than these inspiration blogs, whose very point is to put the viewer into an aesthetic reverie unencumbered by thought or analysis. These sites are not meant (as curation is) to make us more conscious, but less so. That might be O.K., but it also means they have a lot more in common with advertising than they do with curation. After all, advertising trains us to keep our desire always at the ready, nurturing that feeling that something is missing, then redirecting it toward a tangible product. In the end, all that pent-up yearning needs a place to go, and now it has that place online. But products are no longer the point. The feeling is the point. And now we can create that feeling for ourselves, then pass it around like a photo album of the life we think we were meant to have but don’t, the people we think we should be but aren’t."

‘How to tell your friends from the Japs’ in TIME, 1941 vs. ‘Turban Primer’ in RedEye, 2012 – Sixteen Minutes to Palestine
"Two weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, TIME Magazine ran an article titled “How to tell your friends from the Japs”, an arbitrary and insensitive guide on how to differentiate the Japanese from the Chinese. Today, just over a day after the shooting in Milwaukee that left six dead in a Sikh house of worship, Chicago’s RedEye printed a “Turban Primer”, a similarly insensitive guide on arbitrary religio-cultural distinctions between, essentially, Brown people from South East Asia and the Middle East."

I find it so ironic (actually, disgusting) that...
'...that the media continues to disseminate this image of the scary terrorist looking to undermine Western “freedom” and “values,” who is generally portrayed as a non-white/foreign individual, follower of Islam/any other “Asian”/”Middle Eastern” religion, etc., only to further perpetuate hatred of a people and embed irrational fear into the populace. Paul Ryan Is Your Annoying Libertarian Ex-Boyfriend - The Cut

And he’s all about individual rights until we start talking about your uterus — he's staunchly anti-choice. Extolling the importance of personal freedom while radically restricting a woman’s right to control her own body, Ryan's politics are your libertarian boyfriend problem, on a national scale.

How Apple and Amazon Security Flaws Led to My Epic Hacking | Gadget Lab |
"...what happened to me exposes vital security flaws in several customer service systems, most notably Apple’s and Amazon’s. Apple tech support gave the hackers access to my iCloud account. Amazon tech support gave them the ability to see a piece of information — a partial credit card number — that Apple used to release information. In short, the very four digits that Amazon considers unimportant enough to display in the clear on the web are precisely the same ones that Apple considers secure enough to perform identity verification. The disconnect exposes flaws in data management policies endemic to the entire technology industry, and points to a looming nightmare as we enter the era of cloud computing and connected devices."
"He said the hack was simply a grab for my three-character Twitter handle. That’s all they wanted. They just wanted to take it, and fuck shit up, and watch it burn. It wasn’t personal. “I honestly didn’t have any heat towards you before this. i just liked your username like I said before” he told me via Twitter Direct Message."
