stultiloquentia | who you callin' cactus?
I was in the middle of telling Lis I needed Bitty to mentor a trans frog when the tadpole comics came out. When Lis said, "Trans Whiskey?" I said, "Whiskey is shaped like a Dorito; how has he been on T for less than a year?" but we decided this was insufficient reason to stop me. We'll just lampshade it instead, right? Dorito was his nickname when he played with the Pacific Steelers in the Junior Women's Hockey League. Yeah, yeah, just call him Captain Canada. At 5'10", he was tall. Commentators used to call him a "gritty power forward."

Those were the days.

The Wildly Reinterpreted Chapter 700 Naruto Fic (CHAPTER 1 - Bolt)
He knelt on the linoleum floor of his not-quite-prison and realized he not only needed to have a baby, he kind of wanted one. He wanted to have something, what, innocent? He wanted something to protect and fight for, something to lead the future with. And not just that. He wanted that…parent thing. The thing where you look at a baby and think, holy shit, I made that. He wanted the tiny fragile baby that grows into an inconsolable shrieking nightmare that grows into a loud demanding beast of curiosity and then a laughing ball of energy that would make gross faces at Sasuke and say, ugh, Dad.

|| Someone rewrites Naruto to make the ending make more sense, and explains where all those babies came from, when clearly those particular people were not making babies together.

At least, not in the traditional way. In which Sasuke is a nerd, and an asshole, and an asexual who wants babies, so he makes up a new jutsu for it. Comes with both plot and really wonderful dealing with their combined traumas without sinking under the weight of it. WIP. (God, the author must have an actual name that is not the tumblr name. What is it. /o\)

Some tense shifts in the earlier chapters (very odd, the writing is otherwise really strong) but it works itself out, thankfully.

Imagining the Post-Antibiotics Future — Medium
With antibiotics losing usefulness so quickly — and thus not making back the estimated $1 billion per drug it costs to create them — the pharmaceutical industry lost enthusiasm for making more. In 2004, there were only five new antibiotics in development, compared to more than 500 chronic-disease drugs for which resistance is not an issue — and which, unlike antibiotics, are taken for years, not days. Since then, resistant bugs have grown more numerous and by sharing DNA with each other, have become even tougher to treat with the few drugs that remain. In 2009, and again this year, researchers in Europe and the United States sounded the alarm over an ominous form of resistance known as CRE, for which only one antibiotic still works.

Health authorities have struggled to convince the public that this is a crisis. In September, Dr. Thomas Frieden, the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, issued a blunt warning: “If we’re not careful, we will soon be in a post-antibiotic era. For some patients and some microbes, we are already there.” The chief medical officer of the United Kingdom, Dame Sally Davies — who calls antibiotic resistance as serious a threat as terrorism — recently published a book in which she imagines what might come next. She sketches a world where infection is so dangerous that anyone with even minor symptoms would be locked in confinement until they recover or die. It is a dark vision, meant to disturb. But it may actually underplay what the loss of antibiotics would mean.

One time on the New Jersey Turnpike, as I was driving back to college, a state trooper and his partner stopped me for speeding. After I gave the verbal warning and got the okay, I reached into my glove compartment.

“Rolling papers?” he asked.

“Are those rolling papers?” There were about five super-flat packets of Stride gum in the back of my glove compartment.

I pulled them out and put them in the trooper’s hand, which he inspected with his partner as if the two of them had never seen a pack of gum before, and I was let off with a warning and sent on my way.

And as I drove away, I took those packets of gum and threw them in my book bag. How stupid, I immediately thought, for keeping them in there. I should have known they looked like rolling papers.

It wasn’t until I got back to my dorm room that I was amazed that in that encounter, I somehow felt guilty, like I had done something wrong for having gum in my car.

Further Materials Toward a Theory of the Man-Child – The New Inquiry
Like the nice guy from your grad-school program who tries to cover up his hurt feelings by concocting a general theory that explains why he never got a text after his one-night stand, the book portrays the Young-Girl as vain, frivolous, and acquisitive. Therefore, Tiqqun suggests, their intervention requires an ironic performance of misogyny. The question remains: Why is misogyny their only option? And why are so many thoughtful people ready to accept that a layer of irony suffices to turns hateful language into the basis of a sound critique?

so I couldn't fall asleep last night, and I started thinking
about a reverse little mermaid, in which the prince’s sister has always dreamed of life under the sea, and then they are in a shipwreck, and as she hangs onto a piece of driftwood, she sees her brother rescued from drowning by a mermaid. Everybody thinks she’s mad, later, after she’s been rescued. But her brother did turn up alive and unharmed on the beach, and she knows what she saw: a girl, beautiful as the dawn, with a fish’s tail, keeping her brother safe above the waves. She grows sick with longing.

So the princess goes to visit the witch who lives in the woods, and she tells her that she can give her a mermaid’s tail and a mermaid’s breath—but she will always be human in her heart and in her soul, unless she can convince one of the merfolk to fall in love with her. For humans live short lives, and their immortal souls vanish to distant realms after death, while the merfolk live for hundreds of years, and when they die they remain in the sea that is their home.

6 Women Scientists Who Were Snubbed Due to Sexism
Despite enormous progress in recent decades, women still have to deal with biases against them in the sciences. Here are six female researchers who did groundbreaking work—and whose names are likely unfamiliar for one reason: because they are women.
*Jocelyn Bell Burnell: discovered pulsars in 1967 (Nobel prize awarded to her supervisor)
*Esther Lederberg: lay the groundwork for future discoveries on genetic inheritance in bacteria, gene regulation, and genetic recombination. (Nobel prize awarded to her husband)
*Chien-Shiung Wu: overturned a law of physics and participated in the development of the atom bomb. (Nobel prize awarded to two male colleagues)
*Lise Meitner: work in nuclear physics led to the discovery of nuclear fission (Nobel prize awarded to a male colleague)
*Rosalind Franklin: used x-rays to take a picture of DNA that would change of the most well-known—and shameful—instances of a researcher being robbed of credit.
*Nettie Stevens: performed studies crucial in determining that an organism's sex was dictated by its chromosomes... fell victim to a phenomenon known as the Matilda Effect—the repression or denial of the contributions of female researchers to science.

Probably no man has ever troubled to imagine how strange his life would appear to himself if it were unrelentingly assessed in terms of his maleness; if everything he wore, said, or did had to be justified by reference to female approval; if he were compelled to regard himself, day in day out, not as a member of society, but merely (salva reverentia) as a virile member of society. You see, there was something I wanted, something impossible,’ and here a faint smile plays at the man’s mouth, ‘but there was only one person who could help grant my wish.’ He trails off for a moment, lost, perhaps, in his memory of that time, but then he stirs, meets Kurogane’s eye once more. ‘That person told me that in return for her help, I had to make these rings, just like this, and keep them here until the right people came to claim them.’

Kurogane’s first thought is fucking meddlesome witch.

Self-Made Man #22: Second Person - The
Today I stuck myself with a needle. I’m jangly with testosterone. Later I’ll go swim it off. I’ll make my body straight as the line on the floor of the pool. In the locker room, men will wander bare-assed past me, unselfconscious and beautiful, all of them. I will wait until they aren’t looking to pull off my shorts, or will change behind the curtained shower stall, even though I’m beautiful, too.

The significance of plot without conflict - still eating oranges
The necessity of conflict is preached as a kind of dogma by contemporary writers’ workshops and Internet “guides” to writing. A plot without conflict is considered dull; some even go so far as to call it impossible. This has influenced not only fiction, but writing in general—arguably even philosophy. Yet, is there any truth to this belief? Does plot necessarily hinge on conflict? No. Such claims are a product of the West’s insularity. For countless centuries, Chinese and Japanese writers have used a plot structure that does not have conflict “built in”, so to speak. Rather, it relies on exposition and contrast to generate interest. This structure is known as kishōtenketsu.

Normative Sexism: Geek Edition « shattersnipe: malcontent & rainbows
Having realised that the depiction of women in games, comics, collectibles and anime is meant as part of a tailor-made fantasy, many straight male geeks, somewhat unsurprisingly, have become aware of something else: that as said fantasy has been explicitly created for and subsequently targeted, marketed and sold to them, there must be someone out there whose goal is to exploit – and subsequently profit from – their sexual desires. Rather than undertake an intellectual exploration of the relationship between sex, gender and advertising in a capitalist system, however, a disappointing number of these geeks make a different and altogether more prejudicial leap: that the presence of women in an otherwise male-dominated environment can be directly correlated with the efforts of corporations to take their money. Their willingness to pay for the product in this equation, whether pre-existing or not, is immaterial: women, and particularly sexy women, have become a red-flag event. Any attempt to insert women into a setting previously devoid of them must therefore come under immediate suspicion. Women are a cash-gathering exercise, the go-to weapon in some cynical marketeer’s arsenal to help Company A more readily collect the hard-earned monies of geeks everywhere; booth babes being a case in point.

I’m sick to death of historical accuracy being trotted out as the excuse du jour whenever someone freaks out about the inclusion of a particular type of character in SFF,...

Almost uniformly, in fact, it seems as though such complaints of racial and sexual inaccuracy have nothing whatsoever to do with history and everything to do with a foggy, bastardised and ultimately inaccurate species of faux-knowledge gleaned primarily – if not exclusively – from homogeneous SFF, RPG settings, TV shows and Hollywood.

Why I Never Play Hard To Get ‹ Feminspire
As politicians and pundits bicker about what makes rape “legitimate” and feminists worldwide don short skirts for SlutWalks, a stronger current is pulling us all back towards violence and violation. You can call it “patriarchy” or “misogyny.” I call it the entire Saved By the Bell Series, beloved romcoms like How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days and The Notebook (sorry, Feminist Ryan Gosling) and the plot of Pride and Prejudice: popular culture is woven together with stories of women who said No when they meant Yes, or in some cases, eventually meant Yes, after a little creative coaxing.

White Lines on a Green Field by Catherynne M. Valente — Subterranean Press
Let me tell you about the year Coyote took the Devils to the State Championship.

Coyote walked tall down the halls of West Centerville High and where he walked lunch money, copies of last semester’s math tests, and unlit joints blossomed in his footsteps. When he ran laps out on the field our lockers would fill up with Snickers bars, condoms, and ecstasy tabs in all the colors of Skittles. He was our QB, and he looked like an invitation to the greatest rave of all time. I mean, yeah, he had black hair and copper skin and muscles like a commercial for the life you’re never going to have. But it was the way he looked at you, with those dark eyes that knew the answer to every question a teacher could ask, but he wouldn’t give them the satisfaction, you know? Didn’t matter anyway. Strange Horizons Fiction: Librarians in the Branch Library of Babel, by Shaenon K. Garrity
The Branch Library is infinite. All Libraries of Babel are infinite. The Branch Libraries are just smaller.

Which is larger: all possible numbers, or all possible even numbers? Logically, they're the same size. A fraction of an infinite set is still infinite, isn't it? By the same logic, it's possible for an infinite library in which every other book is, say, Stephen King's Cujo to still contain all possible books, same as the main library. It's just that you stand a 50% chance of getting Cujo.

I'm only using Cujo as an example. As you know, we did not work at an infinite library where every other book is Stephen King's Cujo. That library is in El Paso.

I know it's confusing. We used to have a laminated sign behind the front desk explaining the Library system, with all the math, but a few years ago someone stole it and by then we'd lost the laminating machine.

Homestuck is the First Great Work of Internet Fiction |
It is about…adventure and role playing games? Well, sure, that sort of underlies the foundational logic and language of the series. It is just as much a soap opera about kissing aliens, though. Maybe I should assert that Homestuck is a post-modern masterpiece about breaking the fourth wall and making the most of both author insertion and audience participation? I guess I could sum it up as a comic involving video game and internet culture that spawns more memes, which it then perpetuates in a cycle of self-reference between fandom and the author? Maybe I should discuss the quadrants of troll romance and how they relate to the bildungsroman?

I. Fucking. Love. This. Comic.

'Scott Pilgrim' Guy Interviews 'Homestuck' Guy: Bryan Lee O'Malley On Andrew Hussie - ComicsAlliance | Comic book culture, news, humor, commentary, and reviews
Homestuck is about four 13-year-old internet friends trying to play a computer game that will either save or destroy the world. It is sprawling and complex, dumb and hilarious, and full of the most fiendishly intricate references to the basest turds of pop culture. It's about the internet -- cliques and fandoms, the good stuff and the icky stuff. In Hussie's own words, Homestuck is "made of pure internet".

Oh, and it has easily a million daily readers, raised nearly $2 million on Kickstarter, and is actually really good. I have some experience with weirdly popular youth-oriented videogame-referencing epics (i.e. I created the Scott Pilgrim series), so after plowing through Homestuck (twice!) The National Hockey League and its players had a golden opportunity to cement their place as the cool kids on the sporting block, to prove that the game was indeed separate and unique, that the game was worthy of such sentiment.

They were a long way down that track when presented with this opportunity.

And then, even better, a chance this summer to prove that hockey was indeed unique by actually getting their act together on the labor front.

STFU Moffat • How Moffat Ruined Doctor Who For My Little Sister
So there you have it. Not only did an eleven year old point out some of the obvious flaws in the writing and the plot, but she sees the sexism in Amy’s character, in River Song’s character, in how they have been portrayed, and it has destroyed her favourite television show for her.

All of this would be forgivable if Moffat was willing to listen to people’s concerns and criticisms about his writing, but he blatantly dismisses all opinions but his own.

I was going to give this a witty, sarcastic, snarky title, but honestly, I am just too sad. And I think that says it all, doesn’t it? Moffat has ruined Doctor Who for my little sister. Moffat ruined Doctor Who for a young, enthusiastic fan who doesn’t ‘over-think’ or ‘over-analyse’ or ‘get easily offended’, and indeed, can’t even properly express what upsets her so much about how the female characters are being treated.

Moffat isn’t interested in writing stories that inspire eleven year old girls.

Moffat isn’t interested in writing this show for anyone but himself.

And it shows.

Opening weekend of SBaHJ: Behidn the Scenes. Ten minutes into the first screening the Internet was already decoding it, as piranhas decode a capybara. An hour after the credits reached the key grip there came the first flash mob. Twenty-nine teenage girls had all linked hands on a subway platform and begun murmuring the opening lines one after another, a beat delayed, as though singing in a round. They had kept it up nearly four minutes. Someone had sent him a badly oscillating clip: red sweatshirts in the dimness, a felt-tip maze drawn on a plump arm, the blue sudden brightening of a screen through a pocket. The overlaid harmony in their recitation, unintelligible, implacable, a conduit carrying the world’s long current of voices of girls who warn rightly, and aren’t believed. At the margins he had seen passers-by shut up and stop. A chill had passed over his own shoulders, as they all drew out the last note. Attagirls.

He, Once a She, Offers Own View On Science Spat -
Ben Barres had just finished giving a seminar at the prestigious Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research 10 years ago, describing to scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard and other top institutions his discoveries about nerve cells called glia. As the applause died down, a friend later told him, one scientist turned to another and remarked what a great seminar it had been, adding, "Ben Barres's work is much better than his sister's."

There was only one problem. Prof. Barres, then as now a professor of neurobiology at Stanford University, doesn't have a sister in science. The Barbara Barres the man remembered was Ben.

Suuuuuper binary, and problematic language used "he, once a she," but interesting--in that "yeah, we know," sort of way.

The youngest, a experienced dissident described by the media as a “sultry sex symbol” with “Angelina Jolie lips”, glances at his colleague, an activist praised by the Associated Press for his “pre-Raphaelite looks”.  Between them sits a third man, whose lack of glamour has led the New Republic to label him “the brain” and deem his hair a “poof of dirty blonde frizz”. The dissidents – or “boys” as they are called in headlines around the world – have been the subject of numerous fashion and style profiles ever since they first spoke out against the Russian government. “He’s a flash of moving color,” the New York Times writes approvingly about their protests, “never an individual boy.”

hso2012_collabs1 | FIC/MUSIC/ART: The Fault in Our Stars (DAVE<3JADE)
They keep getting it wrong, but each time they start anew--because there's no universe, no matter how far off base, where they do not meet.

|| Oh wow. The quality in this collab is really high, and the tracks used are really great, especially the instrumental and the rap. I love the concept, and the places the team took it. Overall, really fun. (Skipped a couple because of tropey-ness, but really--a lot of excellence.)

Brian Phillips on the USWNT and the gold-medal game - Grantland
Am I getting the point across here? If you like your sports wild, a little rude, and punctuated by massive heart attacks, the USWNT is as pure a drug as you are likely to find on this earth.
