maybe tomorrow (maybe next year) - Sandrine Shaw (Sandrine) - Generation Kill [Archive of Our Own]
Iraq did a number on both of them, no matter how much they pretended they were fine afterwards; it ate them up alive and spat out their mangled remains. It takes Nate years to acknowledge that. Takes Brad even longer. Sure, OIF was a clusterfuck of epic proportions, but they're fucking Marines – they make do, they deal with whatever shit gets thrown at them and don't let it get to them. Except when they do.

But that's just the thing: you can't take in the bigger picture when you're too close, even less when you're part of it. You inevitably get lost in the details, and you need to take a step back or ten to see the whole thing.

|| GK fic: always good for feeling like you've been kicked in the sternum and then helped up by someone who won't stop calling you a bunch of rude names.

White Hats - Dira Sudis (dsudis) - Generation Kill, Curse Workers Series - Holly Black [Archive of Our Own]
"Every day's your lucky day when you work for the LMD, Ray," Brad said blandly.

|| Oh my god. The tension in this is palpable, nearly smothering, but finely wrought enough that reading it is never a chore, just heart-pounding. And then, it turns out to be something else entirely. Really, incredibly excellent. Can be read without knowledge of the Curse Worker Series (as I don't have any), but hot damn, I want to read it now.

ON THE CARE AND FEEDING OF MARINES, BY WALT, AGED 23 AND A HALF, AND RAY, AGED 25 - puckling, Sharksdontsleep - Generation Kill [Archive of Our Own]
OK OK OK. So, this starts off kind of slow, a list of sex things (whoop) that Ray and Walt (and Nate and Brad!) get up to, and it's hilarious, but, yeah, ok, and THEN, shit like this happens:

34. There is a list of things they don't talk about. It's posted on the fridge. Walt's neuroses about Jell-O. Ray's need to compulsively win at Scrabble. And chess. Then there is the list of things they really don't talk about. That list Ray keeps in his head, away from Walt, safe.

Ray doesn't think Walt knows about that list until Walt, out of the blue, while making potato salad, says, "My dad was a real bastard too. If he weren't dead already, they'd never find him."

"Why do you mention it?"

"No reason," Walt says. "Did you want this chopped any smaller?" He holds up a chunk of potato.

"No, they're fine the way they are."

And keeps fucking happening. By the end, it's a beautiful, hilarious, WONDERFUL portrait of these four, particularly Ray and Walt, and it only gets more and more delightful. Read.

Don't You Shake Alone - Dira Sudis (dsudis) - Generation Kill [Archive of Our Own]
Nate looked exactly like Brad always pictured him: exhausted in the full life-in-a-combat-zone sense of the word.

This is a fucking wrecking ball. I've lost two nights of sleep to it, and spent those with my heart in my throat and a whining, sputtering thing in my chest. Impeccable characterization, voices and pacing; for a story that barely leaves the house, this has tension in spades and a finely-tuned sense of love and caring in buckets.

Nate has PTSD and a baby. Brad is going to be there for them.

you ain't generation kill, you ain't shit - Flashing Red Light Means Go, for odetteisodile
"Don't fuck with me," Brad says quietly. He's trying to move back but Nate's not letting him. "I have no idea what I'm doing," Nate admits, feeling stupid and sort of shaky. His lips brush against Brad's neck as he speaks. "But I'm not fucking with you, okay?"

I guess I hadn't saved this before? I've definitely read it, but I re-read it with my breath held. Ugh, so tense and lovely.

oxoniensis: Porn Battle XII (The Dirty Dozen) - Entries
Brad considers it a good sign that when he sits down and says, “I have to hit on you,” the guy’s only response is raised eyebrows. “Sorry. I’d hoped for more creative hazing, but I guess gay chicken appeals to the developmentally stunted.”

The eyebrows drop down into consideration. “Gay chicken is reciprocal.”

Brad lets his most charming grin answer. He’s weirdly relieved when the guy laughs and hooks Brad by an elbow, moving them away from the group he was with to a slightly less exposed, slightly less crowded stretch of wall. “Are we suitably on display here?” he asks.

Remorse of the tv junkie - GK fic: Don't Lick Your Fingers When You Turn the Page
Sometime after Nasiriyah Brad gets a Sharpie. Nate’s not exactly sure when, but one morning he wakes up to the sound of Ray’s bitching, particularly vicious.
the love you take is equal to the love you make - Birthday Fic: Everything Carries Me to You
They don't make a big announcement.

There is, however, a big announcement. It comes on a Monday. The President, the Joint Chiefs, and all the other press-seeking vultures gather and make their speeches. When Brad and Nate watch the coverage on the news that night, the editors cut from the press conference to footage of men making out with each other, in uniform, in the middle of some park.
noelia_g: Fic: Easy to say but harder to feel this way
FBI AU. Undercover. In the suburbs. And pretending to be married. (Safe to say, Brad Colbert hates his life so much.)
lunasky: GK Fic: Mr Frosty - Part 1
Three days, a hostage, some snow globes and an ice cream truck with turret.
noelia_g: Fic: Light up the trenches where my heart lies (until I can see again) - MASTERPOST
Actors AU. Brad Colbert and Nate Fick had met on the set of a now cancelled sci-fi show, years ago. Now, Hollywood turns out to be a small town after all, and it’s hard to avoid someone you broke up with. Especially when you both sign up for the same movie.

The format is a little bit distracting, but not so much that the slow burn and dry wit and ache of these boys doesn't still live. I love them forever.

noelia_g: Fic: Your eyes close as I fall asleep
Sort of an FBI AU. This is the seventh case since Nate took the job with the DC office that involves Brad Colbert in one capacity or another. Can't be a coincidence, no one's that unlucky.

Sounds like a funny one, but it's not, except coincidentally. Mostly its soft and a little bit aching, and about remembering, about catching yourself on the edges of something. Hearts.

nothing smart, or at least not very, nothing revolutionary - We'll All Float On Okay (gk fic)
It takes them three years. Nate has to come back, leave the Corps, fight through the memories, sleepless nights, apathy and never agains, and go back to college, where he works hard and doesn’t lose sleep over anyone’s life. Brad has to come back, take a trip, drink some, exercise more, feel the water closing around him again and again, go to England, go back to Iraq, live through it again and come back home again.

It takes them three years to meet again under Mike’s roof and understand there’s still something from back then they haven’t dealt with yet.

I found the little headers annoying, but they're even smaller than the regular text, so they're easy to skim on by; and then I enjoyed it a lot. Vignettes.

I love these boys. I love them. I love the way they lend themselves to quiet in a way a lot of fandoms don't seem to--not nearly as well, not nearly as naturally--and to intensity. Nate's grandma died, and he takes over her bookstore. Brad is the motorcycle mechanic across the street. Aching and soaring and sweet.

Raising Sand
Oh my god. The Brad voice is amazing. And I completely believe this Ray--the way he thinks more than he wishes he did; the way he keeps going after the cheap thrills, even though they always let him down; the way he's a little bit in love with, a little bit in awe of, Brad. Generation Kill bookmarks; almost through, damn it. The fiction for this fandom is breathtaking; the source material is like a motherfucking punch in your cocksuckin' mouth. I love how much it can say with one line--on the embedded reporter's snapping a photo of a dead girl with her legs blown off as they roll by: "Put that away--what is this, a fucking snuff film?" (It's also fucking pretty.)
