|| This is really cute. I particularly like how transparent everyone is. And that Tae is kind of ridiculous, but not unaware, and Jimin is manipulative but a sweetheart, and Yoongi resents people asking for his attention but actually enjoys it. Really nice.

The first time Jimin sleeps over at Taehyung's, it's an emergency. The other times after? That's a different story.

|| College AU. Doesn't transcend its genre--with all the attendant frat-boy-fuckery and the this-is-probably-actually-an-American-college stuff that most of these show--but Jimin and Tae are really cute. Really good pining: Jimin once has a small breakdown over that Tae is not only platonic soulmate material but BOYFRIEND MATERIAL. I really enjoyed it. (Also! Features a lot of 95-liners from various groups, AND gets all their real names right, which I really, really appreciate. Way less common than it should be.)

A month before GOTSTAR's first tour, Mark has to step down as the band's drummer. Turns out that this is the least of Jaebum's problems.

|| Oh, I liked this, the twisty-tangled nature of JB's feelings and worries and insecurities, all the members' personalities--particularly Mark and Jackson, feeling very themselves, operating with their own motivations and reactions. Lots of obliviousness and pining.

The saying goes: one man’s space junk is another alien’s meal ticket. Likewise: what’s Song Minho’s burden to carry across the stars, becomes Lee Seunghoon’s chance at redemption.

|| Oh my gosh, this is so good? Parts get choppy with space lingo, and a little hard to follow, but overall there's a lot of story and world here, for something less than 10,000 words. These are more Winner-inspired characters than anything (poor Seungyoon is the villain), but I like them.

Harry has terrible best friends, and Draco is a very put upon lord of dance. Otherwise known as "Harry And Draco Have To Go To The Ball Together- OR ELSE".

With the “trial of the century” in his lap, Defense Attorney Park Chanyeol already has a lot of things to handle. Sleeping with the prosecutor had (unfortunately) not been on his to-do list.

|| Ignoring the terrible lawyering in this (seriously, in what world is this a trial of a century, in what world is lawyering like this AT ALL but okay whatever), fun: Chanyeol and Baekhyun's relationship is actually probably my favorite, but Chanyeol's self-centeredness and interest in Kris are also pretty fun.

Baekhyun goes to Beijing to visit his old college roommate, and doesn’t quite get the vacation he’d come for.

|| Cute. Manages the tension pretty well, even if the characters are mostly only vaguely recognizable. (Why is Chanyeol a prince of China? Why does China have princes? Why do they keep referring to Rapunzel? Okay, sure whatever.)

The girl worships the gods of the high places. She is waiting not for rain—the city moves upwards, always upwards, she has known the song-chant since the days her mother crooned it to her in the cradle—but for the absence of rain. The affirmation that the lake is ever in the process of funneling up the chains of heat and sun and evaporative devotion into the arc of sky.

|| Omg. A vignette both pitch-perfect and more human than the book itself--or rather, more carefully, more SPECIFICALLY human. This feels like the world of Marco Polo and Kublai Khan, but extended to three women of Isaura, GOD, I love Invisible Cities and I love this--I had chills the whole time reading it. If you're a fan, I think you'll like it.

The bloodletting was just getting started when outside the operating room, in the locker where she’d stowed it, Ann’s cell began to ring.

“Umm,” she said, her hands up by her head as sterile procedures dictated. The roomful of doctors, nurses, and members of an ancient and powerful cult that she was supposed to pretend she didn’t know about all stared at her. “Sorry. That’s mine. Let’s just keep going.”

“Isn’t that the Parks Department ringtone?” asked the slender figure in the scarlet robes with a face Ann knew she must never look at.

“Nope,” Ann said.

|| Wowowowowoowwow, this was so much better than even I was expecting--a perfect fusion of the P&R characters and the NV-world and approach to life. Really darling.

It figured that the week Kronk decided to really concentrate on his baking would also be the week that everyone decided they wanted to see him.

In words that are not just screaming about my thematic kinks, this is unabashedly lovely; Rosemary and Dill (ROSEMARY AND DILL HER PARENTS' NAMES ARE *ROSEMARY* AND *DILL* AND THEY NAMED THEIR DAUGHTER *OLIVE* oh holy shit how did I not see that earlier ANYWAY) are delightful, just as they are in the movie. A feel good treat of a read.

During the clean-up at the end of the Scanran war, Kel is assigned a scouting position along the border. She handles it with her usual flair.

|| This, like the very best of C&H fic, strikes that note between fancy and philosophical, wonder and existential angst, and the answer it has Calvin come up with is SO WONDERFUL. (This Calvin might be a little, little bit nicer than the Calvin in the comics, but for all intents and purposes, he is SO CLOSE--philosophical ramblings and Rosalyn tormenting included--I love it.)

Kim Yoon-hee kept her two lives carefully separate, until the night that she went on a date and Lee Sun-joon picked up the wrong smartphone.

|| Oh no, I love this, and I never even finished the drama. But the author captures the sense of their personalities perfectly--especially Lee Sun Joon and Gu Yong Ha. Fun.

The lesson here, Susie thinks, is that tricking Death is tricky business. How do you outwit the personification of oblivion? Chess, obviously, won’t be the answer.

|| This is beautiful. I love the repetition, the colors, the simplicity. And of course, partly I'm just weak for Snowman.

The sequence of events occurring in this comic is set during Act 6 Act 4 at one particular point in the flash: when Roxy shoots created a fenestrated portal for Jane to jump through and ascend through a gate. I wondered what would have happened if Roxy decided not to follow her, and chose a different path. Enjoy!

|| How Susie and Calvin get Bacon. Adorable, and in many ways, totally believable.

Harry thinks "Why is Malfoy working in a coffee shop in muggle London?" is a much simpler question than, "Are you going to accept that auror offer and, if you don't, what will you do?"

|| A post-war fic in the long-standing tradition of post-war fics: Harry doesn't know what to do with his life, Malfoy is reformed, love blossoms. But MORE THAN THAT, it's a lovely piece about growing up, about realizing that "both" is often the more accurate descriptor of the world than "either", and Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and Narcissa are all believable people, without being horrible for the sake of Creating Drama. It's really, really lovely, and good in the way H/D is good, now, like hot chocolate. (Not epilogue-compliant.)

John<3Rose collab entry for HSO'12; post-game, the kids all get tumblrs. John and Rose are dating, and ridiculously sweet... And then they fuck up with each other. Takes a bit to take off, but the fucking-up is believable, totally in-character, and sometimes hilarious. Ngl, though, my favorite moments might be Karkat's cameos.

“Terezi...” he says, and he looks down at her shoes. She dreads this, wants to both cover her ears and shake it out of him. Wants to go home and fall asleep on her couch, and wants to go back and tear through the bloody scene for answers. Karkat’s face goes all pained, and then wipes away to a forced blankness that she knows is a lie. He looks up and, “Terezi, it’s Nepeta.”

She will remember this very second for its scent. Thick humidity before a storm, bright flashes of mixed berry from the useless ambulance, and Karkat, all coffee and grey and hard candy red.

|| Oh. A wonderful, wonderful detective/reporter AU, with a great Terezi voice and fantastic background characters, especially Sollux and Kanaya.

His eulogy is Roxy, now trembling quietly, like she's had a part of herself severed and there's not even anything left to shoot to avenge her loss.

He should be sadder. Him and Rose should be over there getting snot and tears all over their jammies. But those four are better at this, and Rose has had to channel the Furthest Ring and be their Seer of Light, holding every piece of their plan in her head at once. If he feels like a truck has run him over and backed up over the remains for funsies, she must feel worse. He's better used here, being a rock for her to lean on.

|| How the final battle might go. Over, and over, and over again. Exquisite characterization and totally believable of Sburb. One of the best pieces I've read for HSO2012.

A Homestuck-style walkaround game in which Bro completes errands on Derse and Prospit, talks to Dersites and Prospitians about their assassination attempts, their secret anarchist yearnings and their love lives, hangs out with MsPaint, and prepares an epic ironic/sincere/ironic puppet show for the gravebait love of his life. Plus card games and dream sequences. This is Bro Strider humour all the way through, so you have to be in that mood, but it's funny and random and fully playable and just really well done.

Captain America looms somewhere just overhead, and there's a wolf at his side. Her—and it is a she, Tony knows it right away—fur is dark, but her eyes are gentle, almost worried.

I met a survivor today who had never been told that she possesses inherent worth, or that there is value in her existence. No one had told her she wasn't to blame; no one had pointed out that the fact that she was still standing was testimony to her strength and courage.

My heart breaks for all the words she's never heard before now.

And I got to wondering - what would you like a survivor to know? What kindness would you want them to hear?

Loki really hated being the littlest giant. He hated it even more since the Jotun had discovered that Loki could be really useful if properly motivated, because to his brethren, "proper motivation" usually amounted to death threats or more or less friendly violence. Now every day they came up with new demands - Loki, fetch us this magical ring, Loki, trick some dwarves into building us stuff, Loki, there's this Asgardian trying to steal my daughter, make him go away, Loki, we need you to turn into a maiden to distract some dragons so we can steal their treasure...

But whenever he came up with something actually worthwhile, like a scheme to overthrow Asgard, or a brilliant magical spell that could turn Jotunheim into a place that was actually habitable and nice and not painfully dull, all he got was ridicule or a good thrashing.

The fairy-tale nature of the writing settles into itself as it goes along (or I got used to it? perhaps both, although I do think the rhythm at the end is just stronger), and it's a fun read. It manages to keep the fairy-tale dichotomies simple and yet folded into the characters. Nice.

I had a lovely long save, but fuck it: worldbuilding, slavery, seamless fusion, squeamish and lovely both.

Loki gets injured, and calls the wrong Avenger. Steve finds that it is, more or less, no more or less confusing than everything else. He just wishes that Loki and Thor would stop making him their messenger. 

Harvey pisses off a supernatural force and is turned into a kitten, taken in by Mike. At first he's unimpressed, but Mike wins him over gradually. Eventually, he returns to being a human and then can begin to woo Mike properly. <br />

What it says on the tin, with a side order of adorable. Both Harvey and Mike are a little more woobie-ish than I think maybe they warrant, but KITTEN FIC what, not a problem. (Also, I shudder to think of Mike being Louis's associate.)

It's one thing to be a woman holding a doctorate and having to deal with the sneers and comments and ruined experiments and stolen data (not that Charlotte has much of a problem with the latter two, telepathy being what it is). It's quite another to be a woman holding a doctorate and know each dark, razor-filled thought behind every cruel smirk and mocking laugh, to feel the resentment like black oil pouring off them whenever she passes.

After defending her thesis to a lecture hall full of people just looking for an excuse to throw her out (and she knew it was true, she could feel it, and every speck of discipline and control she possessed wasn't enough shut out such an immense tidal wave of it), going for a drink is an immense relief. She and Raven choose a bar a long way from the university, far from the thoughts that had clogged her mind like weeds in a propeller, and where Charlotte is finally – finally – able to relax her guard somewhat.

7/21, Part 4. 

Alwaysagirl!Hank. I want alwaysagirl in ALL THE UNIVERSES, so this is not a surprise, but I especially want it done like this--where it looks at how the misogyny would change the character--and keep them the same--and I love it. Read this for that, if nothing else. Honestly, the Alex/Hank felt more like a side-story to the character study. (Honestly, I was a little disappointed by it ending there. I almost would've liked it better as gen, or as a piece that moved past that first moment because, as well handled as it is, it still felt slightly reductive. Delightful anyway.)

This is incredible. It is hella sweet. It has wonderful descriptions of what it is like to be high. It has Erik and Charles cheating at chess! But best of all, it does a un-fucking-believable job of exploring what weed would do to their abilities, especially taking into account Charles's privilige and Erik's trust issues. To wit:

When he blinks his way back to normal vision, he's holding himself up on shaky arms, high off his ass and then some, and it is vitally important that he start taking clothes off now. Charles looks up at him with indulgent, serenely wondrous eyes and follows him with lazy interest as he rolls to one side and starts undressing. Charles interrupts at intervals to kiss him, and, when Erik is peeling off his socks, says, "Oh. Am I making you do that?"

Erik pauses to think, makes it far enough back to remember that his boxers are a ruinous disaster, and says, "Probably not."
