Possible new absorbent that might allow sulfur removal from natural gas or coal/biomass derived syngas without a cooling/liquid step (which normally complicates the process and introduces energy inefficiencies). This would make coal or biomass based syngas much more appealing, especially for advanced syngas combustion cycles that allow for easier carbon capture.

Basically, avoid custom tanks for flow battery sites and base it on modular rack boxes (about a residential hot water heater in size), and focus on mass production economies of scale to improve the costs. Otherwise, you tend to keep running into first of a kind types of costs. You loose some efficiencies, but the argument can be made that you can increase total flow by dispersing valves and pumps. Making the whole thing modular has benefits for site expansion and minimum hardware for initial operations.

For the automotive battery, they seem to describe something conceptually similar to a redox flow battery, where instead of an electrolyte, they are pumping a liquid zinc slurry electrode through an air reaction tube.
