Interesting work on both thermoacoustic heat sources and matched bidirectional turbines for electrical power generation. Thermoacoustic electrical generators previously used linear alternators, but those prefer faster cycles, which is opposite what the thermoacoustic wants (parts sizing goes up unfavorably when scaling), and slower long stroke linear alternators also have issues (long piston stroke, sealing issues). Using a rectifying bidirectional turbine may be a convenient workaround.

Interesting, for marine propulsion applications that use a gas turbine (selected for compactness/high power), exhaust gas waste energy recovery would be better served by a higher efficiency HRSG steam turbine, but the balance of plant of a steam turbine is so large that a supercritical organic rankine cycle, despite the lower efficiency, wins due to compactness pairing with the compact gas turbine.

Motorbike Generates Electricity Using Its Exhaust Gas -- Tech-On!
Bizarre hybrid device, that uses unburnt hydrocarbons in scooter exhaust gas to heat/run a SOFC fuelcell, which also has thermoelectric elements wrapped around the SOFC tubes to capture waste heat as well. Though my first question would be why use a crappy two/four stroke scooter engine in the first place? Why not a series hybrid powerplant, with a microturbine generator with fuelcell combustor? Though I suppose as an aftermarket mod, as long as it doesn't raise exhaust gas pressure losses too much, it might be an easy conversion...

Interesting startup going after the air carbon capture market utilizing new adsorbent techniques (with a heavy emphasis on utilizing available waste process/steam heat for amine recovery). Certainly helps that atmospheric CO2 concentrations are approaching 400 PPM, making it even more economically viable. Claim a target of $100/ton from a cargo container sized unit outputting 1000 tons a year.

Interesting idea of using geothermal style low level heat techniques (rankine cycle stuff) to both cool high level nuclear waste and spent fuel storage casks, while at the same time generating electricity. Which is an interesting concept but faces a dilemma. If you want to maintain access to the waste to generate power, that in turn requires a fair amount of waste. A relatively closed nuclear fuel cycle wouldn't generate very much waste. So this would only apply to existing waste that is yet to be buried that for various reasons would not be recycled in a closed nuclear fuel cycle. Which is still a large amount of waste though.

Interesting energy storage idea, similar to CAES but reverses some of the problems. Efficiency improves somewhat if it can use an on-site waste heat source rather than ambient air (implying a colocated coal or gas turbine plant as baseload providing nighttime recharge of the cryogenic tank)(this can use any kind of low grade heat, even stuff that ORC stuff would sniff at). Total storage volume is less than CAES since you are dealing in liquids and not gases, though you commit to a large number of cryogenic tanks. You could probably couple this with an ASU, so you have a side business of liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen production, focusing on LN2 as your working fluid. Assuming a gas turbine is your nominal heat source, you could potentially do an oxyfuel/IGCC style setup where some turbines are run in cold nitrogen gas mode while others are in oxygen/methane burning mode, with steam recovery secondary generation coupled to tertiary warming of liquid nitrogen.

Using assorted tricks for efficiency, such as a side evaporator using waste heat or low temp solar thermal to provide hypersaline brine for the main process, and various ion barriers to deprive the hypersaline brine of specific ions for specific flows, then reversing the ion barrier types (which causes the deprived brine to reacquire the ions from the main input seawater, which desalinates it), these guys claim lower power consumption (well, electric at least)
