There's a pic in a Popular Mechanics June 1998 article showing the nuclear piston engine using a steam working fluid/moderator with nuclear fuel in the cylinder/piston. Same guy went on to CAESAR reactor work which is similar, using fine tuned light water steam pressure for neutron economy control.

Uh, using the chamber itself as your power pack for the compressor (thus coaxial shaft), isn't really all that different from a conventional turbine or a RamGen turboexpander in principle.

Interesting move for Cessna, moving the 182 line to Jet A burning aviation turbodiesel powerplants. Is the cost of AvGas for GA civilian use looking bleak? If I remember correctly, AvGas is made at only one refinery in the US in a single batch for the whole year.

Interesting mention of turbocompounding, probably in the hybrid context of dual generators, with main driven by the diesel itself, while secondary is energy recovery via turbo. Which also provides convenient turbo overspeed protection by dumping excess turbo energy to the battery (eliminating the need for a waste gate?)

CPT's auto exhaust gas energy recovery system
I dunno, if you are committing to an electric supercharger and an electric turbogenerator, at some point you have to ask yourself how much of advantage having a detonation combustion chamber and the associated piston gear squeezed between the two really is. Why not jump up to a gas turbine burning diesel like a Capstone microturbine, and store excess energy in a flywheel/supercap/battery? Also, conceptually similar to the Turbodyne Dynacharger, which put a generator on the same shaft as a regular turbocharger, which meant excess shaft power from the turbo could be dumped into the motor generator (either to charge a battery, or run an electric braking system for the turbo) which means you could potentially eliminate the wastegate on a turbo.

Using an electric supercharger to fill in the power gaps of a conventional turbocharger (particularly turbo lag) in a series configuration, makes for a different sort of hybrid powerplant. Might have legs in the small engine market, as the paper suggests.
