PLX Technology : Products
96(97) lane chip means 6 x16 links, so 5 downlink and 1 uplink. which effectively defines the max common backplane possible. If you want to hang 8-10 GPU's off a single x16 then you need to hang two backplanes on an additional joiner chip. The interesting situation becomes, in a 20 GPU config, you need 4 5x16 backplanes, but should you then use two joining chips (one for each pair, each using a x16 uplink to the CPU), or one joiner chip bridging 4 backplanes (so 96 lane chip with a x32 uplink to the CPU and 4 x16 going to the backplanes). But two switches isn't good...

So if you do FDE and want to guarantee that a lockdown starts with minimum trigger intervention, this might do. USB monitoring script keeps an eye on attached USB devices. If trigger USB device gets yanked, initiates other scripts, such as FDE encrypt/unmount/shutdown. Which would be a somewhat forced but mostly clean and fast shutdown, rather than hoping you can hold the poweroff button for 5 seconds. Since the USB device could be a cheap flash key on a string connected to your wrist, swing your arm to yank it out.

Two Stanford students rethink the light switch « Nudge blog
If I understand this correctly, it's a variable torque resistance rotary dimmer light switch. If energy is in high demand/expensive, it makes it harder to turn, but won't stop you from turing on the light to the degree desired. Only problem is that it is best paired with analog lighting devices, so any light that can't be dimmed wouldn't benefit, at least not directly unless the switch provides resistance to a traditional on/off switch motion.
