BNL Newsroom | Breakthrough Iron-based Superconductors Set New Performance Records
New high current/high magnetic field/high temperature superconductor that is iron based that beats the pants off of existing iron and cuperate superconductors. Demonstrated 1MA/cm2 critical current, 200KA/cm2 at 30T at 43K (not quite LN2 temps but close), and they think they can up the temperature by further tweaking the layering.

Proximity-induced high-temperature superconductivity in the topological insulators Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 : Nature Communications : Nature Publishing Group
Oh wow, improved superconductivity just by sticking a topological insulator on top of/pressing up against a cuperate. No fancy joining or bonding or chemical interaction or plasma deposition. Just touching basically, bridged by a thin layer of double sided scotch tape.

Compact High-Temperature Superconducting Cables Demonstrated at NIST
Interesting that they have gotten over some of the manufacturing issues, by picking a HTS with a slightly higher strain capability but using it as a tape wrapping a simple copper core. Since this uses an HTS tape, it is comparatively easy to manufacture. It also seems that by using a higher strain capable HTS, they can reduce the cross section of the HTS cable for a given amperage. Now the next trick is figuring out a core former that is hollow to allow coolant to run through it.

Levitating Magnet May Yield New Approach To Clean Energy
I'm a little stumped as to how the floating magnet is supposed to control things when it is floating via a rather large externally applied magnetic field. I guess there must be some field orientation advantage compared to simply applying a larger field from outside. I wonder if this could be applied to SMES or other cryogenic systems to remove the supports that contribute to heat leakage?

NIST Tech Beat - June 16, 2009
So, this may be good research news, but maybe so-so news for the superconductor wire guys. Strain from installation may end up hindering performance. The out may be using some wrapping layers that have desirable shrinkage at cryogenic temperatures to recompress the superconductor to undo the grain boundary stress.
