Hrm, pages 53-55 suggest actual issues only in the 25000 ppm range, not the 1400ppm suggested by the harvard study, derived from submarine crew studies, but some of the studies had not a lot of study participants, and US Navy standards and expectations for crew may be somewhat different (currently they try to keep average 3500ppm and try to keep below 8000ppm, but they are also in a long term exposure environment where the body may adapt)(previously 4,100 ppm average with a range of 300-11,300 ppm)...

Marine Tech Factory - Propulsion
Interesting brushless DC motor design for underwater propulsors. On the face of it, I guess what they did was coat a conventional BLDC motor internals with some sort of waterproof coating, and fiddled with the shaft bearing seals. How well will it stand up to saltwater though?

9th Sense Robotics seems to be pushing for a wifi tethered RC sub. They mention solar power on the support buoy, but can you really gather enough juice to operate the sub and wifi, since it needs to fight wind drift and currents, while streaming HD video? If they can pull it off, this might become a toy for pleasure cruisers.

Welcome to Penguin Automated Systems
Company specializing in remote control underground mining vehicles and equipment. Apparently a Dr.Greg Baiden has prototypes for a wireless optical high bandwidth communications system for underground remote mining operations (necessary for the high bandwidth/resolution video feeds to remote control mining vehicles and equipment). Long term aim is to use this with ROV/AUV underwater subs to cut the tether.

Basically a cabled ROV that connects to a surface station thingy that doubles as a wifi accesspoint to access the ROV's HD video camera and remote control the ROV like a submarine. Sort of like the AR.drone quadcopter. Supposedly going to cover both iOS and android.

Gee, people have been proposing an offshore HVDC grid intertie for japan for years. Why is he getting so much credit? Real balls is proposing interties to russia and korea up front rather than "later as part of a pan-asia supergrid". Also, needs to take some pointers from the guys at the other end of the supergrid, namely DESERTEC-australia.

So Son's saying what a lot of people have been talking about for a long time now, but he makes for a good spokesman. 4GW offshore HVDC supergrid intertie in the sea of japan, pan-asia links similar to DESERTEC, independent ISO/TSO to break the stranghold of regional oligopolies in japan and have fair feed-in tariff structures without wasted energy. No calls for grid energy storage though, though if a true supergrid is operating, it can be reduced or eliminated if the timezone spread is far enough. Also trotting out the national energy security horse too.

Revolutionary Communications System Promises New Generation of Untethered, Undersea Vehicles
200m range isn't much, but if you set up a mesh network of these near an underwater platform you could potentially do autonomous survey/monitoring runs. The other thought being dropping a long tether-like cable with these optical modems at 100m intervals with a small ROV at the bottom to drag around the end of the cable, operating like a mobile accesspoint for other ROV's and UUV's/AUV's. The military application would be a sonar buoy accesspoint connecting to a sonar module that drops below local thermoclines to see under them.

The Technology That Can Communicate Electronically Through Solid Steel - BAE Systems
BAe rigs up an acoustic information transfer system to cut the number of through-hull connectors on submarines, reducing the number of penetrations. Though I'm a little surprised they are using an acoustic system, as you would normally want to cut down on noise output, especially at anything with a sea interface. I guess the transmission power is sufficiently small enough not to go far. Couple this with a simple post shaped plug sticking out of the hull as part of an inductive power transfer system, and you could almost eliminate all through-hulls short of cooling water and waste related pipes.
