Hollow Spheres
These guys are working on innovative ceramic hollow spheres for use in armor applications. One type is just spheres packed onto a backing plate, providing limited flex. The next type is packing spheres into woven tubes of kevlar, creating lumpy bead strings that can be assembled into a flexible armor. Final type is a hex tile module with a limited play interface, allowing small flexibility and easy customization for large area vehicle armor.

Hollow concrete sphere anchors for floating wind turbines do double duty, anchor the turbine, and serving as an energy storage subsystem by pumping water out of the sphere at depth. 30m sphere stores roughly 6MWhr, sweet spot is 750m depth, economically viable at 400m, works at 200m in a pinch, 1500m is pushing it (stress fracture implosion of the vapor head inside would be fierce).

One Per Cent: Green Machine: Storing wind power beneath the waves
This seems to be describing an underwater CAES setup, but I though the original concept was actually a pumped hydro based concept. Basically, a strong in compression concrete sphere has a positive displacement pump/generator placed on it, and pumps water out of the sphere at depth. This emulates a pumped hydro dam/lake/reservoir but with a huge hydraulic head. With a deep underwater CAES setup, you run the risk of the sphere becoming buoyant, which kinda defeats the secondary purpose of being an offshore floating wind turbine platform's anchor. Maybe it isn't actually CAES but a simple pressure regulation system to maintain minimum pressure to prevent excess vapor formation (and the risk of ice accumulation)?

Smart idea of using oversize concrete anchors that contain concrete pressure spheres to anchor floating offshore wind turbine arrays, using array surplus power to run (what has to be positive displacement) pumps to pump out water from within the sphere into the open ocean. Run the pump in reverse to generate power. Deals with a number of interesting issues in a clever way, such as a CAES setup causing excess buoyancy, and necessary mass for the anchors. I wonder if you can modify the bottom to be a suction anchor as well?

Wow, this press release story is utterly useless. Interesting concept, much like epoxy infused with hollow glass spheres, but I suspect from a cost and manufacturing standpoint it will remain an engineering curiosity and not really applicable to general situations.
