PHARO is the electric version of the PROFAC ramscoop atmospheric propellant collector/diver, using concentrated reflected light from SPS' dumping on a passive cooled solar cell array at (?5x-50x?) solar intensity for roughly 175KW to power an MHD ramjet thruster running on collected liquid air/nitrogen. Quick and sleazy mods I can think of are using ground based laser beamed power (rather than simple SPS reflected concentrated solar), inflatable frustum collector nozzle expansion, and perhaps a VASIMR engine (though the MHD ramjet in principle is similar to a VASIMR, with fuel coming live from the collector).

Rocket science :: PROFAC
PROFAC is the nuclear thermal atmospheric propellant ramdiver, PHARO is the electric MHD engine version (ostensibly powered by 5x concentrated solar power beamed from an SPS constellation). It actually makes sense, especially if you have an offboard power source (PHARO was looking at a 200KW range power receiver). Easy mod is an inflatable frustum over the collector cone to increase the size of the of the capture inlet.

The DIRECT guys are proposing Leviathan, an update to the old Truax Sea Dragon design using annular aerospike rocket engines. Which is exactly the idea I was kicking around with college friends back before 2000. Sea Dragon basically revolved around the logical end to the big dumb booster argument, making a rocket so large that certain materials handling issues become easier. Namely, using submarine pressure hull manufacturing techniques on half inch thick steel plates formed into a cylindrical tank body. You build this in a shipyard, not a clean room hangar. Due to size, sea transport and launh is must, but that ends up making a lot of other things easier. Leviathan neatly sidesteps one of the issues with Sea Dragon; the second stage expandable nozzle skirt. Aerospikes get almost equivalent performance for less complexity and risk. Reusuability is easier at this size, and sets the ground for SSTO.

Radiation Remediation
It's like a Roomba for the Van Allen belts! Which actually has long term policy implications, much like orbital debris cleanup. This would potentially make very low thrust propulsion like Hall effect much more viable for the GTO market, compared to now where you need chemical, VASIMR, solar thermal, or nuclear thermal thrust levels to cut transit times. Won't do anything about getting cooked by hard solar wind and cosmic radiation, but that's always been a time/shielding critical issue anyways.

So this ex-astronaut thinks it's a good idea to resurrect Almaz hardware for commercial spaceflight purposes. Which basically means he would have to bankroll the same work that went into converting the current Soyuz to digital flight hardware, on a vehicle with far less flight hours logged. It would make more sense to build a Soyuz variant with a larger service module and maybe a Block DM upper stage to make up for the increase in mass. At least that's still in production.

Data clippers to set sail to enhance future planetary missions
Reiterating the old adage "Few things can beat the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes...", this proposal for orbiting cycler spacecraft using solar sails for bulk data ferrying is interesting, though solar sailers have even greater weight limitations compared to conventional spacecraft, and suffer from even larger handicaps in far deep space, short of using a laser from earth to provide secondary beamed propulsion.

Interesting radioisotope photoelectric generator concept, which is applicable to deep space probes. The gamma ray radiation would suck, but most space probes have varying levels of gamma ray protection, so having a nearby source isn't horrific, just unpleasant.
