So a baked oak leaf turns out to be a decent sodium battery electrode. A bioengineered oak leaf that is easier to harvest/use would be an interesting base from which to build battery parts.

Interesting result, but they failed to do the simple check of seeing if simply bubbling CO2 gas through the algae grow medium fluid at the same critical timing would result in the same increase in performance. Specifically, is direct stimulation/fertilization of algae with carbon dioxide sufficient, or is the chemical pathway being used here specific to free swimming carbonate in solution.

Interesting idea, but what about the fundamental principal of batteries, being that you get better energy density by increasing the surface area of the electrodes? Wouldn't the liquid electrode layer represent the least amount of surface area possible?
