RK Transportation | Technology. Driven.
A not entirely insane idea of using a very small electric motor as a replacement for crankshaft flywheels in piston engines. The idea being instead of using rotor inertia in a conventional flywheel for smoothing, use a small electric motor that bursts torque when the piston is at top or bottom dead center to smooth out the output torque. This is not a full (parallel?) hybrid implementation, more like some might call a mild hybrid.

Interesting, using 2 xis gymbal for each rotor stack so have full 6 DoF all the time (aside from gymbal-lock scenarios). Should allow high agility, and potentially allowing the body to go vertical.

Looks like a semi-hot cycle helicopter, but instead of a potentially more complicated tip jet drive, it appears to use dual contra rotating direct drive turbines to spin the rotors, exhausting into the inter-disk area of the rotor hub. That exhaust choice is a bit odd though, but it might increase local air velocity over the blades.

I hate to sound dumb, but why hasn't a contrarotating power turbine set been joined to a twin contrarotating geared turbofan setup in a puller configuration? Is it the cost of the gearing and potentially 3 or even 4 shaft setup to make that possible, compared to a simpler free power turbine direct driving the rotors in a pusher configuration? But a puller config allows putting in a recuperator, something a pusher configuration would have trouble with.

Now this is an interesting concept. Using an inflatable ring, you have a tension structure that's lightweight. The ring probably doubles as a venturi wind focuser as well. I wonder what sort of inflation pressure you need though.

Seems suspiciously similar to a StarRotor Gerotor in operation, but using some shape tricks to increase available chamber size (seems to have the ability to bridge two cavities in the rotor, but doesn't seem to fully evacuate a single chamber either). Truly a positive displacement engine? See the patent for the funky internal rotor shape.
