Firefox to Import Windows Root Certs To Avoid Antivirus SSL Scanning Issues
Uh, no , part of why Firefox doesn't suck is that it used an independent certificate store. sucking in the windows cert store is asking for trouble.

Nitrogen fixation in a landrace of maize is supported by a mucilage-associated diazotrophic microbiota
Corn/maize variant that doesn't need fertilizer in poor soil because it has weird aerial root structure actively secreting goop that support nitrogen fixation bacteria, so in theory easier/more sustainable agriculture without fertilizer, but the thing is a bit more tree-like and takes 2-3x as long to grow ears. Still neat though.

This used to be a decent alternative to NRT, which has been promising a vaporware PNRT for ages, but this tool also seems to no longer be maintained...

[root] StickMount - Android Apps on Google Play
Apparently this will let you connect USB sticks (and it seems potentially keyboards and mice too, as well as external HDD), via the USB connector. I guess it must be doing some kind of forced USB host mode operation, or forcing a USB2Go mode for compatible chipsets.

Phonemic Diversity Supports a Serial Founder Effect Model of Language Expansion from Africa
Biologist applies analysis techniques from genetics, particularly common root founder analysis, to make the claim through phoneme tracking that human languages have a common ancestor in the 50,000 year range, well beyond the current 10,000 year horizon currently espoused by linguists (due to limitation on hard data using their own techniques). It's half *no, duh" confirming the common assumption regarding the dispersal of human from Africa, and the "oh wow" factor of this kind of analysis. Scientific circles seem to say the methodology of this paper seems to be sound.

Quorn ~ Healthy meat-free chilled and frozen foods, ingredients, ready meals and recipes
Quorn, a meat substitue using fungus mycoprotein and fungus root structures (mycelium). Apparently, the root structure strands are ultracentrifuged then heated, giving the artificial fibrous muscle texture while the heat treatment reduces DNA and RNA present (a treatment to reduce the amount of purine present, which humans would otherwise metabolize into uric acid which is unhealthy in high concentrations). Hrm, would have a bit of a tough run trying to compete in japan, because of the presence of other types of protein substitutes/sources from soy. Though the japanese food/pharmaceutical companies are getting heavily into engineered foods, which would make Quorn and the processes behind it attractive. Especially since it would allow for high intensity domestic foodstuff manufacturing in an urban setting.

ecovative design
Mycelium roots, if in a sealed package like a brick, can create building insulation with equal or better insulation properties than styrofoam or fiberglass. When unsealed, it is biodegradeable, though at a slower pace than what one would expect.
