An sp-hybridized molecular carbon allotrope, cyclo[18]carbon | Science
Had to use atomic tweezers to make this, rather than randomly making it in a gas medium.

High quality retractable keychain, with a carabiner integrated properly to hook onto your belt, rather than some sad little metal clip. Pair this with one of those drill bit changer type keychains and you have something good.

Robin Hanson on Twitter: "It still amazes me that academic fields, connected by co-citation, are arranged in a ring. Is there a missing "dark field" in the middle that we will find someday to connect it all together well?…"
Hrm, there must be rather silly but interesting reason for a ring formation of cites. Some suggest researcher bias, others suggest it is the categorization not being fine grained enough (other pics suggest finer network rather than ring), other say the limited group of papers, other say it's only looking at bidirectional cites (may be problematic if a seminal paper that is cross-functional)...

Velkess - About
Oddball low cost energy storage flywheel, based essentially on the same physics as a cowboy lasso being spun. So, the entire ring/torus/cylinder of the flywheel, along with the "rotor" it seems, is made of flexible materials.

Lossless Gigabit Remote Packet Capture With Linux
Does a few simple tricks to up performance and not drop packets, like splitting network access from disk I/O into separate threads on different CPU's. Dude thinks the performance increase for packets over 300 in size is both big, and could additionally benefit from the PF_RING kernel patch.

Interesting wind turbine design, basically gives up on trying to capture energy from the center, and tries to capture tip shedding vortexes. Also it may not be obvious but it appears to use diffuser rings and is swept forward so air gets funneled towards the center, but the center hub cone forces the air back out towards the edges, possible increasing local velocity. A little surprising they don't fair the backside of the hub. Appears to use active tracking rather than a passive guide vane. Weight is an issue for a ringed fan design like this, so it won't scale up to megawatts, but since their target is quiet operations in residential areas, that isn't such a big deal.

These guys were proposing a Lunar equatorial ring belt lined with surface mounted solar panels, sharing power through superconductors to fixed power beaming sites to fire on the earth towards receiver stations. Have something to do with Shimizu Corp, a big construction company.

Scality is changing the face of Cloud Software
Basically a SAN platform using an object oriented filesystem, to get over situations where you have huge numbers of files causing you to bump up against traditional filesystem metadata/inode limits even though you haven't maxed out raw storage. Which sounds suspiciously like a self balancing distributed cluster object oriented database system to me. Hell, NeXT used an actual database as their filesystem way back in the day, to decouple metadata from file storage, and allow blistering file search speeds.

Swift Wind Turbine - Home
These guys seem to use a solid rotor ring. Maybe some kind of trick to even out power output from a small rotor device by increasing it's rotational inertia? But wouldn't that make it harder to start in light breezes?

Winflex Wind Turbine
Now this is an interesting concept. Using an inflatable ring, you have a tension structure that's lightweight. The ring probably doubles as a venturi wind focuser as well. I wonder what sort of inflation pressure you need though.

DLR Blogs - Energie-Frage der Woche: Mit welcher Technik lässt sich Energie überhaupt speichern?
So this dude Mathias Popp is applying for (or has) a patent for an above-ground pumped hydro reservoir design using an earthen ringwall island in the middle of a converted open pit mine lake. Apparently there is a trend to convert disused open pit mines to lakes anyways, and considering the mine itself is considered already fowled and "brownfield", it shouldn't be that hard to make the center island ring.
