Sweetwater Spectrum
An autism specific residential facility/community with local employment opportunities. Interesting autism specific design issues like silent HVAC, and interior soundproofing such as low sound floors and anechoic ceilings.

Camphill Kimberton
A structured community for young and old Down's Syndrome people that provides assisted living and employment, focusing on handicrafts and management of the rural farmlands of the campus. People seem to think very highly of the place (it's nothing like being institutionalized, a lot of good social interaction as well as physical activity), but it isn't cheap

asahi.com(朝日新聞社):JX to upgrade Ene-Farm household fuel cell system - English
Still only 70%, and no mention of an off-grid mode, so it probable still doesn't work under grid blackout conditions (natural gas circulator pump and maybe the stack heater are grid powered only rather than self powered via a small accumulator battery).

Toshiba to Launch PV System Using Lead Battery -- Tech-On!
Maybe the translation wasn't right, but the power controller operation modes seem a little off. Shouldn't it be operating in daytime grid power mode with solar boost and battery assist, then back off to grid battery recharge mode at night?

Honda to Launch High-efficiency Gas Engine Cogeneration Unit -- Tech-On!
Hrm, I would normally suspect a gas engine here implies a piston judging by the mention of a linkage, but that puts a cap on efficiency since you want to avoid predetonation. Interesting implementation of a variable cylinder volume, but couldn't you do that in a simpler way with a prematurely closing intake valve and simply use cylinder/crankshaft inertia to fight the suction that would develop? But why a reciprocating engine? Capital costs? You would think a fuelcell or capstone microturbine would be better...

Japan 'plans solar panels for all new buildings'
Interesting, but I have a bad feeling about this. Japan sometimes get especially fixated on a particular subset of a major technology and just won't let go. This will probably be a requirement for solar PV panels, which METI is pimping as a means to support the semiconductor industry. So this puts non-rooftop PV, wall PV, thin film type systems, non-planar PV, combined cycle hybrid PV/thermal, thermal electric solid state, thermal electric mechanical, and pure thermal (for heating and adsorption coolers) at a potential commercial disadvantage. Hopefully the government won't be dumb, and require both feed-in and diurnal energy storage with smart metering so you don't create energy generation islands, and allow offgrid operation. There will likely be a push for putting support for EV recharge hardware connectivity in garages (high voltage lines). Maybe a market opportunity for smart meter makers to make integrated power management hubs with high voltage switchgear?

Panasonic plans home-use storage cell
Panasonic now getting into the home energy storage market with lithium-ion battery cells. Though one would think you would integrate some ultra-capacitors to better handle the random push/pull of home energy states. Now if somebody could make a nice home energy controller as a COTS device, that can link with Tokyo Gas distributed Ene-Farm home fuel cell systems and Kyocera solar panels to manage the total power profile and to potentially return energy into a smart grid, then you might have something. There seems to be some movement afoot regarding that central smart grid controller, creating an interface independent router to handle the comms interfaces and protocols as a universal device. Especially since you could use a GSM cell modem or inline in-band PLC or a custom radio or even the home's internet connection.
