Panasonic Sees Japan Share of Solar Sales Jump on Tariff - Bloomberg
Wow, that's a big feed-in tariff. Now is this actually a subsidy to support a flagging semiconductor industry, or the real deal? Real if similar high end feed-in tariff for other types of renewables, otherwise, it's fluff pork for NEC/Toshiba/Panasonic/Sharp/Kyocera/any other big zaibatsu...

One Per Cent: Green Machine: Storing wind power beneath the waves
This seems to be describing an underwater CAES setup, but I though the original concept was actually a pumped hydro based concept. Basically, a strong in compression concrete sphere has a positive displacement pump/generator placed on it, and pumps water out of the sphere at depth. This emulates a pumped hydro dam/lake/reservoir but with a huge hydraulic head. With a deep underwater CAES setup, you run the risk of the sphere becoming buoyant, which kinda defeats the secondary purpose of being an offshore floating wind turbine platform's anchor. Maybe it isn't actually CAES but a simple pressure regulation system to maintain minimum pressure to prevent excess vapor formation (and the risk of ice accumulation)?

ソフトバンク孫正義氏、自然エネルギーを普及する6つの“緊急提言”を発表 - 家電Watch
So Softbank has cooked up a company called SB Energy and is actively pushing for multiple 200MW class "megasolar" powerplants to be built. Also supporting import of energy surpluses from northern and southern regions of japan to fuel the power hungry core. Also making some policy complaints about right of grid interconnect rejection by regional power monopolies hampering renewable energy rollouts.

Slocum.pdf (application/pdf Object)
Smart idea of using oversize concrete anchors that contain concrete pressure spheres to anchor floating offshore wind turbine arrays, using array surplus power to run (what has to be positive displacement) pumps to pump out water from within the sphere into the open ocean. Run the pump in reverse to generate power. Deals with a number of interesting issues in a clever way, such as a CAES setup causing excess buoyancy, and necessary mass for the anchors. I wonder if you can modify the bottom to be a suction anchor as well?

Official Google Blog: The wind cries transmission
The other shoe drops regarding Google being a power broker. This offshore long distance transmission line network kills two birds with one stone; power leveling wind turbine output by averaging over a large geographic area, and new long distance transmission capacity with little to no NIMBY blockage (because it's very difficult to block what people can't see and is beyond the 12 mile limit) carrying power from southern US power producers (which includes the new nuclear reactors in Georgia). No other major power broker can probably bring online such large north-south transmission capacity using existing rights-of-way, and will likely have to either buy into the project at a disadvantage, or end up getting screwed by Google later in the power spot markets.

The New Charging Infrastructure: Controlling Cars and Homes through Power -- Nikkei Electronics Asia --May 2010 - Tech-On!
Nice little overview of V2G tech and the coming smartgrid as a potential opportunity for japanese businesses to fight back after their crushing defeat in the software IT business. Except, the horse is already out of the barn, considering there are real smartgrid deployments in the US, while in japan the government is still in the discussion stage (typically talking forever, then bam, sudden fullscale nationwide rollout of one solution that is slightly behind, as opposed to homogeneous tech rollouts elsewhere). Many businesses have been forced to go to the US to do tech demonstrations and rollouts because of a lack of opportunities in japan, which is telling.

Interesting idea of a gearless turbine (permanent magnet ring motor perhaps like those hubless tidal turbines?) mounted on a solid kite wing that is controlled to fly figure 8 racetrack patterns in an underwater current, such as a tidal current.. Interesting way to up the water speed through the turbine, but the guide and mooring cable/power takeoff will be a little obnoxious. I wonder if a KiteGen carousel system would be better suited to this scenario, as it centralizes the generator so the only difficult part is the kite control lines.

Seems these guys are proposing a supergrid style tie-in of a DESERTEC setup in the Australian outback to markets in SE Asia, India, and China, piggybacking on natural gas pipeline infrastructure and possibly augmented by offshore wind (likely at convenient transformer substation rigs and LNG/methane recompressors).
