1 connection, 7 balloons, 1,000 kilometers – Loon Blog – Medium
Apparently one could do similar with existing HSMM-mesh setups for several years now, minus the antenna pointing. Plus there is the grand-daddy of it all, the AT&T long lines network (though that was point to point and really mesh). Notable that this appears to be microwave, judging by the antenna, and not lasercomm.

IoT satellite relay service, using very small satellites called SpaceBees. Like quarter cubesat scale (at least one dimension less than 5cm). Got busted for FCC unlicensed launch on PSLV C40 of 4 SpaceBee sats.

Their US patent 8224189 is interesting, basically a laser retroreflector with a flickering blocker/moderator, much like an externally lit LCD screen. Modulating the blocker means a ground based laser can receive data from the UAV via modulated reflection from the corner retroreflector skin, which is probably much lower power than a RF transmitter or onboard comms laser. WOnder what the data rate is though.

EUEC 2014 talk.ppt - Google Drive
Interesting bootstrapping proposal for SPS, using a laser boosted Skylon with a dedicated laser beaming station in orbit. The difference is to cut down on the time to initial orbital beaming, rather than outfit a full SPS in orbit, commit to a ground station beaming microwave power up to a laser relay satellite, which in turn beams back a laser to Skylon. This changes the mass budgets such that you aren't hauling up solar panels for an ostensibly first pseudo SPS. The physics of microwaves means you can cheat and make a larger ground antenna to fire microwaves up, plus then you have electric fiber lasers, though the kicker is the huge radiator array to deal with waste heat from the lasers.

Oxygen Cloud
A sort of private cloud file storage/sharing service for companies who don't want to use public cloud services like DropBox. Basically it's a VPN with a storage front end, connecting your local storage to any authorized internet device. These guys just act as a VPN mediator/relay, which is arguably the most obnoxious part about a private file sharing cloud.

Tor Cloud
I dunno, it is cheap and rapidly increases the potential number of nodes, but you start to create observation choke points and single points of failure. it's one thing to be running tor on real hardware in a colo somewhere, it's quite another to be running tor in virtualized instances in a cloud computing cluster owned by a corporation that regularly assists law enforcement without a court order, which would allow memory peeping. The only defense against this is that these seem to be bridge/relay nodes and not exit nodes normally, but that doesn't solve the network monitoring issue.

iTwin - Remote File Access just got Easy | File Sharing USB Device | Simple Secure Connection
This appears to be something akin to a darknet filewall puncher for specific pairs of computers via USB hardware tokens, via a cloud hosted relay server (similar to how skype works I think). Not via internal on board wireless, like the IUM, so you are restricted to wired or wireless online access via the host computers involved.
