Interesting chinese work on using EoL C-band transmitter GEO satellites that have drifted off-plane as a pseudo-GPS system with potentially equivalent performance to GPS at substantially lower cost. I assume there will also be a terrestrial repeater network, likely cellular tower based, for improvements in urban canyon environments. The interesting question is will any existing satellite operator be wiling to rent their EoL but still operable satellites, as this can be considered part of a military weapons and navigation system potentially. The alternative is chinese GEO sats having the capability baked in to improve usefulness at EoL. They only need 4 SIGSO sats and 2 GEO sats for the minimum constellation, ostensibly covering mainland china.

Interesting artificial bioremediation platform, using recycled plastic and foam to make essentially hydroponic mounts for plants, which free float in lake or river water. The plants pierce the matting, with roots dangling below, offering bioremediation of local water.

Interesting idea of feeding effluent/wastewater/sewage into ocean floating clear tubes to make algae and clean the water. End run around the issues of fertilizer/nutrient feeds for algae production, algae growth medium location, facility structure cost and location, and nicely deals with the wastewater output of sewage treatment facilities.

CO2-Free Engine Powers Up
A magnesium burning steam cycle engine, with a proposed regeneration of magnesium reactant from magnesium oxide cycle output via solar powered laser. I wonder what the energy costs of regenerating the reactant are, because the laser is energy intensive, and there probably needs to be some mechanical treatment of the magnesium to make it a fine powder.

Oceans of plastic
Okay, the idea is attractive, but collecting all the microscopic trash plastic particles without killing off huge amounts of local life will be hard. Any driftnet approach will kill all animals collected by design unfortunately.

Vac from the Sea
Nice little PR campaign. But the seed for thought is, large tuna fishing fleets are increasingly unsustainable due to reduced catches. Retrofit the fleets for recovering plastic from the great pacific garbage gyre would be a huge PR move. I'm looking at you Japan.
