XCOM - X-ray communications research

Image Sensor for Free-Space Optical Communication and Imaging
Interesting hybrid sensor, with dedicated pixels for imaging purposes and optical communication receiving. Separate LED transmitters complete the optical communication loop, though I suppose the next step is embedding the LED laser in the sensor as well, much like those LCD displays with embedded imaging sensors.

A repository for 3D printer parts files for weapons parts, in particular the lower receiver of a gun, which is the only actively regulated component in the US. Considering the current home manufacturing loopholes (which allow non-registered manufacturing of lower receivers as long as they will not be sold/transferred and probably stay within one state), public dissemination of weapons parts files is a potentially significant issue, both in terms of arms technology management/policy, and 3D printer regulation/policy.

Interesting biocompatible power transfer research for implantable electronics, since it uses lasers that can pass through living tissue. Only issue is inherent to the process; namely, you are using a medium to convert tissue penetrating laser light to heat, then using a conventional thermoelectric generator embedded in the medium to generate power internally, which means you have a non-trivial amount of waste heat to reject through body tissue and fluids. As an alternative to skin penetration for power transfer this is nice, and it is not sensitive to EMF interference like induction pads, but induction pads are more efficient probably and generate less heat internally. This might be a good application for sensors, but may not be ideal for larger devices like assist pumps or pacemakers.

Interesting research on creating the opposite of a laser, a sort of antilaser. A loss medium basically disrupts a laser, which had been amplified in a gain medium. Demo is near IR. Hoping for slightly more broadband sources. Could be used for laser heat absorbers as a thermal laser receiver in remote power beaming applications...

A nice little system using LED lighting to also transmit data, combined with a custom small form factor retroreflector/receiver (not much bigger than existing IRda sensors). They are also doing PLC and DC PLC work, so that the overhead lamp assembly contains not only the LED and transmitter encoding circuits, but also a PLC modem for transmitting data over the power supply circuit so you can retrofit into exisitng lighting systems without running new data cables.
