goTenna | No service, no problem.
Uses a low power FM radio as a long-ish range outdoor mesh network repeater/range extender thingy to connect smartphones in the wilderness. Only does voice and text messaging though, but considering the underlying bandwidth that's pretty good.

LTE Direct Research Project
So a bad mix between ham radio and iBeacons, but you can't randomize your MAC address (IMEI) so you are always identifiable. Won't work for protest situations as a carrier can functionally prohibit by disabling authorization for spectrum. Might be nice for disasters to form mesh networks assuming the authorization infrastructure survives.

New trick of adding vortex twist rather than traditional polarization to a signal to boost encoding for a single frequency. The requirement for what appears to be a directional helicoidal parabolic antenna ( does this mean the antenna needs to be a few wavelengths in depth?) means no love for mobile omnidirectional antennas though.

Company specializing in remote control underground mining vehicles and equipment. Apparently a Dr.Greg Baiden has prototypes for a wireless optical high bandwidth communications system for underground remote mining operations (necessary for the high bandwidth/resolution video feeds to remote control mining vehicles and equipment). Long term aim is to use this with ROV/AUV underwater subs to cut the tether.

Interference Unlocks Faster Mobile Data - Technology Review
This seems like the next logical step after a context/location aware cellular network where the baseband calculations are offloaded at a datacenter, and there is basically only an amp and antenna at a cell mast. Since a datacenter baseband calculator is doing most of the work in what is essentially a phased array antenna with distributed antennas, it's not a huge logical step to do DIDO. But the extreme location accuracy necessary to get the interference patterns for DIDO to work make this a difficult affair if you can't guarantee location/motion/track data directly from all client devices. But it is interesting that Rearden Labs, the people behind the OnLive! streaming game service, are developing this. Perhaps they have most of the tech developed for OnLive! and are trying to find new markets for the technology?

So softbank FINALLY might get a low frequency band to fix their radio penetration problems? Or will NTT and KDDi do a bait and switch and screw them over? Getting stuff in the 900MHz would fit in well with an overall plan for acquiring foreign cellphone models with little to no modifications to the hardware, since that's an original GSM band for voice and SMS communications, which would help Softbank enourmously since they have a reputation for dropped calls. It would also improve battery life since it's a lower power mode than operating at UMTS 3G at much higher frequencies. You would still need to use UMTS 3G for data if you want high speed downloads though. COnsidering Vodaphone did the original network deployment, I bet there is a lot of legacy GSM gear that could be activated with a simple software switch.

Piping wireless into the home
Using the ability to pipe radio waves over fiber optics to deploy a UWB short range network inside a home easily with sufficient backhaul bandwidth. Though the obvious problem then is deploying the fiber an UWB accesspoints. I suppose an interesting argument could be made for a dual install of solar fiber optic lighting with RoF hybrid network fiber optic cable, as you could potentially reach all necessary areas.

Phone-Dialing via Radio Is the Dumbest Thing in Tech Today - DTMF - Gawker
Interesting trick of using inline DTMF tones to dial stuff from sound sources. Marketing stunt, maybe. But then again, I could see someone doing a a web ad (probably flash) doing something similar, where if you mouse over, it shows a QRcode and plays the DTMF tones so your cellphone can acquire the number to be dialed...
