Magnetic quantum ratchet effect in graphene : Nature Nanotechnology : Nature Publishing Group
Interesting research, basically making a magnetic quantum ratchet out of graphene, effectively making an AC/DC rectifier. But, they used a 7 tesla mag field and a 3.34THz AC input (between IR and microwave), so not entirely practical. But, infrared nanoantennas have a need for rectifying their AC output and they are currently manufactured in the IR range, so if you can somehow provide the necessary mag field, that might be the trick to make it work...

Interesting work on a actual magnetic topological insulator. In theory this should allow reductions in line transmission losses. But this needs magnetic materials, and currently requires cryogenic cooling, so on the face of it, it isn't much better than current high temperature superconductors. Might be more applicable to chip scale stuff, especially if they can get the working temperature up.

This would be an interesting alternative in bandwidth congested cities as an alternative to trenching fiber, as you could do a laser mesh network via rooftops. The adaptive optics can overcome the smog/inversion layer issues and maintain pointing accuracy.
