The Evocative Machines Project
This is an interesting direction to run with how japan interacts with technology. A secondary artifact of Shintoist beliefs in spirits inhabiting objects perhaps as well?

Why are conversations limited to about four people? A theoretical exploration of the conversation size constraint - ScienceDirect
Which might suggest freeform conversations in meetings only really work well at 4 or less people, or else you have the ritual/social equivalent of a conch token to control speakers (which effectively cuts speaker count to compensate). The take that you are effectively tracking potentially 8 "endpoints" also suggests some connection with memory limits (you generally can handle 7 things simultaneously, maybe don't count yourself?)

An interesting takeaway is the thesis that HUD notifications compete for language processing time in the visual cortex due to unconscious tendency to process language. This might imply text notifications are worse than iconography, but what about situations where single word characters exist like in japanese/chinese? Is that language processing, or iconography pattern matching?

BBC NEWS | Health | Lithium in water 'curbs suicide'
So some japanese researchers finally put 2 and 2 together and find coking up the populace leads to a happy populace. Though I wonder how that plays out against the amount of canned beverages people in japan drink, compared to straight tap water. Forgetting the ethical issues of subtly and purposely poisoning the populace with a heavy metal, what about the ethical issues of what would effectively be state sponsored mind control? This would be the thin edge of a wedge leading to mandatory cognitive enhancement drug taking "for the benefit of society and the economy" isn't it?
