Wait a sec, this strayton smells like an aviation turbocompound diesel cycle. The thermoacoustic part is a nice touch, but recent work shows a bad match between linear alternators and thermoacoustic systems (but did show a novel solution using a rectifying bidirectional turbine substituted for the piston)(See Aster Thermoacoustics), but this paper is proposing a triangle shaped loop thermoacoustic system called DELTA (Double-Acting Extremely Light Thermo-acoustic Converter) to overcome a linear piston's limitations.

There's a pic in a Popular Mechanics June 1998 article showing the nuclear piston engine using a steam working fluid/moderator with nuclear fuel in the cylinder/piston. Same guy went on to CAESAR reactor work which is similar, using fine tuned light water steam pressure for neutron economy control.

Interesting engine that works on expansion of liquid nitrogen as the working fluid in a piston engine (similar to compressed air engines), but the real savings is for refrigerated goods delivery vehicles, that can use the cold exhaust for cooling cargo. Wonder how well it pairs with hybrid electric drivetrains, or functioning as a range extender?

GE Combines Natural Gas, Wind, and Solar - Technology Review
So the idea is colocate a wind turbine array in the solar thermal heliostat field, and use the solar thermal heat to boost the steam turbine in a natural gas combined cycle rig. No mention of thermal heat storage from the solar thermal system, but considering the gas turbine can operate in peaking mode, there's less of an incentive to do so. The gas turbine also can do some load following moves to buffer the wind turbine output to take care of the wind power variability issue. It appears to spec for dry cooling the steam turbine. The core concept of a heavily integrated multisource powerplant is intriguing, and does cut the cost of some equipment (mainly steam turbines/generators, and transformers, and controls). However, if the integration is too high, then later expansions or uprates will unbalance the optimizations, potentially to the point that it may not be worth the costs.

Wrightspeed Inc | Hybrid Digital Drive System
Sounds like the gas turbine they describe is a Capstone MicroTurbine due to the no lube and no cooling setup, but they don't explicitly say that, since their main engineering is on a series hybrid controller and battery management architecture, which theoretically can accept any input generator power source, and to a lesser extent can be used for retrofits of existing vehicles by slapping in a generator where the transmission is now.

MTT rotating combustor concept - Micro Turbine Technology BV
I really want to see a cutaway describing this. From other descriptions, it seems to be some sort of radial centrifugal compressor with a combustor integrated into the edge of the compressor wheel, followed by the turbine blades. It appears to be a single monolithic rotor as well, probably with a specially shaped case to assist in the flow. But, at some point, I would imagine the logical end result of needing to up the compression would lead down the path towards a RamGen style monolithic compressor/combustor/rotor.

Lloyd's and Hyperion Power Systems are teaming up to do dev work regarding modern shipping using small modular nuclear reactors as powerplants/engines/steam generators for large ships with a defined high speed need. There was some interesting work recently that a three ship fleet with nuclear power for the transpacific container cargo transport market could seriously beat a 4 ship fuel oil powered fleet on a profit and tons/day or tons/mile basis.

Hrm, as a general rule, is running a direct drive or belt drive alternator better or worse than using an alternator generator colocated on the turbocharger shaft? I suppose a marine diesel has power enough to spare to get away with it, but what about cars and trucks? There was that hybrid turbocharger for cars a little while back, but that was to get over turbo boost lag, and wasn't intended to be a primary power generator alternator...

GM Planning Rotary Power Plant for 2nd Generation Chevy Volt….Did we Miss the 1st Generation?
Interesting report of GM looking at a high density powerplant option for the followon Volt vehicle. A wankel rotary is interesting, but the main expertise for that is Mazda, so there would need to be a tech agreement. I am a little surprised by the drivetrain cost issue with a microdiesel. Small diesel generators for boats don't seem to have such a cost issue, and this is a series hybrid vehicle so it should be a drop in replacement. I'm also surprised there isn't a return to a microturbine. GM has some turbine history, and Capstone is a small enough company to buy outright. Capstone, or WilliamsJet, have great tech for single piece milled turbines.

So, um, I think this is basically multiple valveless pulsejets driving an impulse turbine, right? I suppose since it's valveless, there are pressure and shock wave related reasons why you may not want higher pressures in the combustion chamber. Also, you can't use a downstream turbocharger since that would increase backpressure of the main turbine, so the blower must be powered by the main turbine (mechanically or electrically driven?)
