Mountain Gravity Energy Storage: A new solution for closing the gap between existing short- and long-term storage technologies - ScienceDirect
MGES is a sand bucket chairlift style energy storage system, that can also carry up water on the side. Interesting takeaway that pumped hydro systems are limited to 1200m height difference due to excessive hydraulic pressure, but a potential energy system based on hauling solids doesn't face this limitation.

This one is a straight up winched weight in a shaft, rather than vertical bore hydraulic piston. Grandfather clock clockwork steampunk action here...

Electricity and Power Storage - Ares North America
Someone is finally getting around to implementing heavy electric trains on long grades as a gird energy storage system. Though admittedly the current system is smaller scale and for load leveling a wind power plant, and using narrow gauge rail along with a third rail in rural settings seems like a poor choice in the long term. Concept is sound, but having individual motor/generator cars is an interesting compromise. As long as the primary weight can be provided by cheap gravel, I suppose it doesn't matter.

Ares | Advanced Rail Energy Storage
ARES is basically an electric train kept on a long, climbing siding or disused mainline, filled to the brim with gavel cars full of sand. The idea is to use excess power to climb the train up the line, and when recovering energy, run the train down the mountain in generator mode. Simple, and more or less exists already (existing trains run electric generator based braking to onboard load resistor banks to waste the energy as heat), just need to fine tune the energy recovery for delivery to the grid.
