Public-Interest Technology Resources
This feels like a greater manifestation of a concept where all law making/drafting must go through a version control system, so it is clear what the origins of a law's language permeate from.

ITU-T Work Programme
Y.2770 is a DPI spec from the ITU for national or provider level deep packet inspection and surveillance of network traffic. Basically it's an attempt at standardizing the surveillance tools of police states, arguably to make it cheaper to implement. It's things like this that make a UN/ITU internet takeover look worse than the alternative (leaving the US in charge). Naturally, promoted by Russia, China, and a number of middle eastern states...

Why Energy Poverty Is the Worst Kind of Poverty - TIME
Sure, it's nice to talk about raising up the poor/third world, but there are undertones to this. There is already a subtle movement towards energy reduction under the guise of austerity in first world lifestyles, and not by choice (actually attacking affluence). Which boils down to "make your life suck to bring parity with those below you". Which is a zero-sum game ideology, and ignores that fact that humans are greedy and want to protect what they already have. It's still possible to do things that will raise everyone up creating rising tides that will lift all boats (though not necessarily equally, and not necessarily being unequal in the ways you would assume).

METI trying to get into the web 2.0 game. Some interesting ideas, like converting closed school facilities in rural areas (which are numerous) into distributed datacenter operations. Which might actually work if you razed the schools and put in containerized datacenter pods, containerized generators, and containerized cooling on the former front lawns.

Charlie's Diary: Merciless
A criticism of the US's lack of mercy in many aspects and a focus on the "contract" part of the "social contract", which has far reaching implications. The tug of war between unfettered personal freedom and collective safety (made under the assumption of weak or at least loosely coupled interdependency) in this case has to be painted against a backdrop where there is a fundamental distrust of governmental power and all things associated with socialism/collectivism. It certainly resonates with the desire to personally benefit exclusively from your effort (as a form of reward/motivation for effort), and not be dropped down to an external, universal, and mediocre average.

june 2009 by asteroza - U.N. 'Climate Change' Plan Would Likely Shift Trillions to Form New World Economy - United Nations
Anybody seen much about this? Copenhagen Accord, the follow-on to the Kyoto Treaty, seems to be reviving up for some big requirements. Forcing the world to go green by sanctions and fines? We'll see. This swings both to the "UN is a bunch of blowhards and nothing will happen" end, and to the "OMG, new world order UN global government, shoot the blue helmets" end.

For A New Green Society
This appears to be a technogaian utopian vision statement, sometimes also referred to as the Bright Green movement, which seeks technological solutions to environmental problems primarily as opposed to pursuing other paths primarily, such as lifestyle/cultural reductions and political/economic change. Which strikes me a bit as a somewhat realist oriented approach, because people still want their McMansions and their 101 varieties of apples with valet parking for their SUV reflecting a basic human desire/greed for a comfortable and lay life, so any solution that is transparent to the end consumer and doesn't require a noticeable change behavior is more likely to slip through, if not be successful. Examples being the gradual elimination of incandescent lightbulbs, environmental law affecting manufacturers and raw materials, and other efforts to make the system smarter than the end user so the the people don't realize they are taking part in casual sustainability.

Visualising MPs’ Expenses Using Scatter Plots, Charts and Maps « OUseful.Info, the blog…
Boy, I'd love to see what would happen if they did this in Japan. The media would have a field day for at least 6 months, just for national politician expenses, never mind the prefectural or local politicians. This would be an interesting way of naming/shaming/forcing to resign a large number of the old guard DPJ and LDP politicians at once to attempt by citizen pressure a political clean sweeping.

More cases of asian countries heading to africa for resources not available locally. Though Daewoo getting burned publicly like this probably hides many other follies, and a great many more successes. Wasn't china getting big in mineral resource recovery recently?

…My heart’s in Accra » The Cute Cat Theory Talk at ETech
Any sufficiently advanced read/write technology will get used for two purposes: pornography and activism. Porn is a weak test for the success of participatory media - it’s like tapping a mike and asking, “Is it on?” If you’re not getting porn in your system, it doesn’t work. Activism is a stronger test - if activists are using your tools, it’s a pretty good indication that your tools are useful and usable.
