Insolight – Making solar energy affordable
Smart idea, using microlens plastic plate over CPV solar cells in a grid pattern under the plate, then shift the plate a little bit to track the sun. So basically you could do an artificial muscle actuator or MEMS to shift the plate, rather than some gigantic tracking heliograph CPV setup. Plate shift still limits tracking angles, but the cost is much cheaper.

Hrm, manufacturing method is actually EXTREMELY similar to Lockheed's OTEC CWP continuous pipe maker technology. The difference may be Lockheed's pipe maker uses a laminate fabric laydown process that follows the pipe axis, while this seems to do a possibly continuous spiral wrap. Hard to tell.

Revolutionary radiation-sensitive plastic (trademark "Scintirex") with a performance superior to plastic scintillators used for measuring radiation and enabling a major reduction in production costs : NIRS
Sintirex is a recycled PET plastic based plastic scintillator, which basically means the chunk of plastic glows in the dark if hit by radiation. So you put it in a sealed case with a simple optical sensor like a cheap CCD to make a crude but effective low cost radiation detector. Apparently it should be possible to make portable detectors that currently cost $500 for around $100 or less now.

Nice little PR campaign. But the seed for thought is, large tuna fishing fleets are increasingly unsustainable due to reduced catches. Retrofit the fleets for recovering plastic from the great pacific garbage gyre would be a huge PR move. I'm looking at you Japan.

Interesting arguement that a SPS demonstrator can be built now with COTS/near COTS hardware, taking advantage of mass production of terrestrial products to reduce costs. The primary tricks being accepting losses in efficiency and overcoming it by reducing system mass, so the actual W/Kg is still higher. Thin film solar, carbon fiber booms, thin film inflatable reflectors and optics, power equipment mass reductions, and lower cost space access (SpaceX) are the COTS components that make at least the demonstrator possible. There is the interesting talk of making sure most technology/products are dual use, such as wireless power transmission to HALE LTA UAV sensor blimps to offload payload power requirements.
