Still kinda expensive to do a whole ship hull, but this basically uses a supersonic flamethrower to treat a metal surface with a carbide layer for biofouling protection, cuts fouling by 50% or more.

so lithium niobate makes for great resonators for fiber optic networks, but is chemically inert so you can't etch it easily. Now, it looks like they've achieved usable dry plasma etching to make waveguides/resonators.

Low cost plasma membrane reactor to efficiently convert ammonia to hydrogen
Using a plasma field between an iron tube and palladium foil tube, ammonia can be broken down to nitrogen and hydrogen, with the hydrogen pulled through the palladium foil efficiently, resulting in very high hydrogen gas purity separation. Process is low temperature and pressure as well, though the palladium foil probably isn't cheap. Effectively an ammonia fuel reformer for a hydrogen fuel cell, allowing storage of low pressure ammonia as fuel.

So they are using a lesser plasma to be a gain medium for a laser, to make a more laser, to make a stronger plasma wakefield, for a particle accelerator. Rather than starting out with a really powerful laser. Implies tabletop accelerator may be easier now.

Interesting new variation on the VASIMR theme, using a helicon to get high density plasma injected into an IEC wiffleball with an outlet hole for the rocket plume (which will be more like a plasma torch). Apparently also get some thrust vectoring by rotating the wiffleball exit point physically by rotating the ball grid.
