Direct electrosynthesis of sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid from brine streams | Nature Catalysis
recycling output brine from desalination plants to make sodium hydroxide in bulk. Apparently desal plants normally have to buy it to adjust input salinities, so producing it's own makes some sense...

Synthetic glycolate metabolism pathways stimulate crop growth and productivity in the field | Science
New synthetic pathway spliced in to override native pathway to improve CO2 capture and reduce accidental O2 capture (and subsequent remediation metabolic cost), for a massive boost in photosynthesis efficiency. But this is for C3 plants, so C4 plants like rice/corn may not work?

Cheap plant oil can give us healthier salmon
So farmed salmon eating plant diets lack Omega-3 fatty acids, as they usually get that from eating other fish. Farmed salmon can sorta get that back by adding fish oil to their feed, but that costs money. Now, using transgenic plants that put out DHA and fatty acids as feed seems to fill the nutrition gap for farmed salmon.

More Details >> Secretary Perdue Issues USDA Statement on Plant Breeding Innovation
Hrm, so plant GMO means bringing in genes from unrelated organisms. But CRISPR editing of plant genomes for point changes/deletions, bulk changes that could/were achieved via traditional plant breeding (but difficult to expand/commercialize conventionally), and importing genes from related (how related?) species doesn't count as GMO, thus no labeling requirement. FDA still says any artificial gene modification to animals counts as GMO, and the animals get regulated as "animal drug"?

Slashdot Science Story | One Variety of Sea Slugs Cuts Out the Energy Middleman
A particular sea slug seems to already have a large amount of the DNA required to make chlorophyll, but lacks chloroplasts so has to ingest them by eating algae. Once onboard, you now have an animal with a photosynthetic metablism boost and an alternative energy source for the animal. While it would never be enough to run a human, it would be a nice little boost for people living in the tropics. Possible early genetic treatment for proto-transhumanists, as opposed to that gandollinium nanobot energy source?

News Release : SHOWA DENKO K.K.
Someone pointed out that ideal plant growth acceleration under artificial lighting would be 92% red LED's and 8% blue LED's, and that white LED's are a waste of energy. So these special red LED's by SDK would be great for indoor agriculture and specialty photobioreactors for algae production.

Though there will be the inevitable comments about underground growops in a certain variant hemp industry...
