similar to liquid piston, being a reverse wankel, but rather than LP's lozenge piston, this one uses a square, which ends up forcing the seals to be on the piston like a wankel, which negates the reverse wankel's primary advantage of tip seals on the cylinder wall (allowing cooling/lube)

Nuclear piston engine, using gaseous "fuel" and hydrogen gas moderator, with neutron reflector piston and cylinder. Uses piston top-dead-center compression effects and a "spark" (external neutron source, like an ADSR particle accelerator neutron spallation target, or some sort of cylinder wall embedded neutron source). Wonder if LiquidPiston reverse wankel would also work well here. Negative void coefficient is nice too.

There's a pic in a Popular Mechanics June 1998 article showing the nuclear piston engine using a steam working fluid/moderator with nuclear fuel in the cylinder/piston. Same guy went on to CAESAR reactor work which is similar, using fine tuned light water steam pressure for neutron economy control.

Appears to be a linear free piston ICE engine, probably for range extender work. Uses a piston rod linkage to connect the free piston to external rods that mount the generator stator coils, so the generator portion isn't in the hot cylinder/piston (though that means a a sliding seal for the piston rod to exit the head)

Interesting tandem twin motorcycle engine that in theory cancels crankshaft vibration, but while a 4 stroke it sends both pistons down at the same time, so wouldn't there be hammerblow type vertical vibration? The patent covers an intake optimization trick that may be the more applicable innovation.

Interesting take on pumped hydro, using a giant solid stone piston for the compression mass, cut using an upper and lower ring tunnel connected by a wire saw. So basically an excavate in place scheme for a high mass, rather than say Gravity Power, which uses a vertical TBM and an artificial (concrete?) piston. Still uses water as the working fluid, no indication if this is closed loop. Some of the drawings even show the piston cut from the ground surface, which means as you store energy, this giant cylinder rock mass rises from the ground like a mountain...

Using a gas piston to keep the linear generator rod from smashing through the cylinder end works, but it seems more like they are using the linear generator as a braking motion limiter (reverse generator to motor mode) to keep from overwhelming the gas piston.

Have a relatively interesting free piston based stirling engine generator (hot side 1200C, cold side ambient air)(Not that great efficiency but decent). If this was modular, could use this with non-solar heat sources? Also, may be an optimized thermoacoustic resonator?

Interesting technique of using a solid double ended piston to drive counterrotating cams to get rotational power, the cam path itself is an interesting way of smoothing out the top/bottom dead center of the piston stroke too. I wnder if it's strictly necessary to have counterrotating trilobe cams though (are pairs even required)?

That Ducati V8 uses a very interesting rocker mechanism to link outer and inner pistons in a single piston bank so the piston bank has a single drive crank conrod for transmitting the power to the crankshaft. A kind of pseudo-boxer configuration within a single piston bank. Potentially very compact, but I wonder how well it works?

The supercharger/turbocharger electric hybrid is interesting. Use the intermediary motor to supplement boost during turbo lag and make up. I wonder if you could do the opposite, run the turbocharger as a generator when there is excess input exhaust gas power into the turbocharger, to prevent overpressure and opening of the wastegate (with corresponding losses in efficiency)?

Ecomotors Opposed-Piston Opposed-Cylinder Engine Could make Class 8 Trucks 45% More Fuel Efficient
Interesting opposed piston engine concept. Each opposed piston cylinder set/module consists of pairs of inner and outer pistons. By putting the inlet and exhaust ports at opposite ends of the cylinder, you get better fuel burn, and potentially easier valve systems. Opposed setups get some nice balance going, and because it is "flat" engine you could potentially put it under the floor/bed of a vehicle rather than in the front, for better weight balance (provided you are using all wheel electric drive, which is not unreasonable since this engine concept uses an electric turbo/supercharger so you will in principle need a large generator/alternator attached to the driveshaft anyways). I wonder what would stop you from using a concept like this for a diesel cycle, since it is functionally a two stroke based cycle?

In some ways a mix of split cycle and wankel techniques, creating an engine with wankel style rotors of different sizes, matched so the compression rotor is smaller than the expansion rotor, an external (to the piston) detonation combustion chamber with long dwell times, and a weird rotor setup that shifts the seals from the rotary apexes to the case pinch points.
