Stuffs a spherical (savonis? darrius?) turbine in water pipes for low head hydroelectric power generation at the edge of the water distribution network, beyond pressure vaults?

Benkatina turbine
Pipe water turbine for pressure vaults where high pressure water mains are converted to lower pressure water lines for local distribution. By using the wasted pressure at that point, local power generation is possible.

Interesting last comment, stream piping a zip file into libarchive via the bsdtar frontend, potentially allowing a RAM based in-memory operation.

Benkatina Hydroelectric Turbine - Leviathan Energy
Interesting inline water turbine power generator. Probably best suited to water main pressure vaults, that reduce water pressure to neighborhood pressure levels, which are otherwise wasting pressure/kinetic energy in the pressure drop.

UA Engineering Professor Uses Aerospace Materials to Build Endless Green Pipeline
Hrm, manufacturing method is actually EXTREMELY similar to Lockheed's OTEC CWP continuous pipe maker technology. The difference may be Lockheed's pipe maker uses a laminate fabric laydown process that follows the pipe axis, while this seems to do a possibly continuous spiral wrap. Hard to tell.

British to Test Geoengineering Scheme - Technology Review
I think the geoengineering test results will probably be inconclusive due to scale, but the materials science and manufacturing research to make the early test's 1Km tall water pipe, and the projected follow on 20km tall vertical pipe for sulfur dioxide particles is more applicable to other industries. The 20 Km pipe would face a minimum raw 6000 bar pressure at the base, and there are wind/torsion loads too. That assumes it is one monolithic pipe though. Easy trick is embedding an electric cable/tether, and putting electric boost pumps at intervals so the bottom raw pressure is less.

CSP Home - StratoSolar
This is so crazy it MIGHT work. But due to the physics properties of the lightpipe (particularly the number of allowable bounces), you are pretty much committed to the 163m diameter lightpipe for the 20Km altitude. So that means your initial prototype likely has to be at least 1GW. There's also the catenary bend issues of the lightpipe tether to deal with due to winds aloft. One could make the argument that if you are committing to such a huge vertical pipe, you could just as easily commit to a solar updraft tower using a buoyant chimney.

BusinessWire Fractals Offer New Way to Be Cool
This, if vaguely practical, could potentially be game changing for a number of industries. Military IR control via directed heat rejection means you could potentially send telltale IR emissions directly away from the enemy. Spacecraft radiator design could get interesting. If the directional control is high, this has consequences for things like concentrated heating applications and situations similar to heat pipes.

Aqua-PEX burst resistant flexible plastic tubing. Apparently a suitable alternative to copper pipe in concrete slabs for radiant heating in freezing conditions, as the flexibility can absorb the expansion of water freezing in the pipe should the radiant heat source fail. Well, probably.
