New trick, using gold nanoantennas embedded in thin film silicon to turn a flat sheet into a near diffraction limited optical lens. Wide bandwidth too. Applicable for IR. Usable for large aperture beam expanders for a long range laser? But the demo seems to be a 1cm lens, and they are only seeing 1-10% efficiency.

Interference Unlocks Faster Mobile Data - Technology Review
This seems like the next logical step after a context/location aware cellular network where the baseband calculations are offloaded at a datacenter, and there is basically only an amp and antenna at a cell mast. Since a datacenter baseband calculator is doing most of the work in what is essentially a phased array antenna with distributed antennas, it's not a huge logical step to do DIDO. But the extreme location accuracy necessary to get the interference patterns for DIDO to work make this a difficult affair if you can't guarantee location/motion/track data directly from all client devices. But it is interesting that Rearden Labs, the people behind the OnLive! streaming game service, are developing this. Perhaps they have most of the tech developed for OnLive! and are trying to find new markets for the technology?
