Identification of the mechanism responsible for the boron oxygen light induced degradation in silicon photovoltaic cells: Journal of Applied Physics: Vol 125, No 18
PV solar cell degradation actually has a previously unseen mechanism, which has now been identified. It appears the solution to "repair" degraded solar panels (increase effective lifetime) is to heat them in the dark for a few minutes at 200C, but that only resets the lifetime and doesn't prevent degradation? Unfortunately, wire solder melts at below 200C, so you can't just bake an old panel in your home oven to fix it or the interconnects will dribble out.

If you can take out the backing metal foil of a PV panel, then line the bottom with a narrow band IR re-emitter that converts rooftop heat to a band that can escape out of the atmospheric IR window, allows roof cooling and power generation simultaneously in theory.

Solar Ship | No roads. No fuel. No infrastructure.
Similar to the old Aereon designs and that Stingray, this is a heavier than air hybrid airship using a large inflatable wing to provide increased lift at low speeds. New trick is embedding solar panels in the large upper surface area of the wing to make it an electric aircraft. Not total vaporware, as there seem to be flying prototypes, but it isn't obvious if the prototypes have usable range from the solar panels, or if the panels are mere partial range extenders for what is essentially an externally charged battery electric aircraft.

New semi-transparent glass solar PV panels, intended to be filler wall panels in apartment balconies, allowing you see through the balcony panel somewhat and produce power. Since Japan has so many apartments with balconies, but comparatively little roof access for those same apartments, this is interesting compromise solution for green energy distributed generation, as well as improving the visibility/lighting/aesthetics of a balcony/veranda area. This also works pretty well in Japan because of certain building codes, which sometimes outright require southerly facing balconies, as well as protecting those balconies' sun access by limiting the shadows of neighboring buildings. So in practice, if you have a large apartment block going in a residential area without a huge concentration of tower blocks, you should have almost unrestricted access to the sun on teh balcony side of the tower block.

Apparently, by mimicking LED design concepts and other tricks, like increasing the reflectivity of the backing mirror, these guys have created a single junction PV cell that broke the 26% barrier. They apparently want to move into low volume initial manufacturing to produce iPad recharge cover panels, as that is a good enough demo of manufacturing methods, and is a servicable niche that can get them early revenue during the solar industry downturn.

So they idea is to get a group buy corp to bulk purchase the panels, and do the install work, in exchange for reduced power rates for the home owners potentially. Would make better sense in a retrofit view if there was integrated energy storage with demand metering and feed-in, going all in on a HEMS. More integration is cross link with a natural gas fuelcell, hot water tank, and adsorption cooling HVAC compressor (waste heat from the fuelcell/hot water tank drives the air conditioner)

Japan 'plans solar panels for all new buildings'
Interesting, but I have a bad feeling about this. Japan sometimes get especially fixated on a particular subset of a major technology and just won't let go. This will probably be a requirement for solar PV panels, which METI is pimping as a means to support the semiconductor industry. So this puts non-rooftop PV, wall PV, thin film type systems, non-planar PV, combined cycle hybrid PV/thermal, thermal electric solid state, thermal electric mechanical, and pure thermal (for heating and adsorption coolers) at a potential commercial disadvantage. Hopefully the government won't be dumb, and require both feed-in and diurnal energy storage with smart metering so you don't create energy generation islands, and allow offgrid operation. There will likely be a push for putting support for EV recharge hardware connectivity in garages (high voltage lines). Maybe a market opportunity for smart meter makers to make integrated power management hubs with high voltage switchgear?

PV Battery, Water Heater Combined for Efficiency -- Tech-On!
Definitely a "duh, why didn't I think of that" idea, though I imagine there may be long term issues regarding clarity of the clear plastic due to mineral accretion from the water and external clarity due to UV degradation and air pollution. But it is a neat trick to use water's optical properties to improve collector efficiency. Japan has a long history of home solar water heaters, but then tend to look terrible after a number of years and can be a real eyesore because they usually integrate the tank as well (but in Japan, home resale value is so low because people care about the land value more and build homes with poor longevity anyways so people care less about external appearances).

I guess the plan is to use SES stirling engines to do cooling/energy recovery on the backside of the XR700 panels, as a mixed hybrid two stage direct electric and heat engine electric system? The XR700 doesn't seem to use a reflector concentrator like SES systems do, so the stirling engine has to be back mounted...

Interesting mixed use methodology, where a cellphone basestation is grid backed, but is operated primarily as a power price curve following battery backed power supply with solar assist, the aim being to reduce grid load during peak hours and to reduce the overall grid power consumption costs by going after the cheap power at night, followed by renewable energy assist during the day via solar. Reminds me of that new basestation design (By Ericsson?) those is a modular concrete tube tower with the built-in vertical axis wind turbine. The tube tower is probably a better choice in urban environments due to smaller land footprint ( I don't think you could get a good solar array size on the top cap of the tube), but the tribrid with solar isn't a bad idea in more rural settings, though at that point you might as well throw in a VAWT.
