The DIRECT guys are proposing Leviathan, an update to the old Truax Sea Dragon design using annular aerospike rocket engines. Which is exactly the idea I was kicking around with college friends back before 2000. Sea Dragon basically revolved around the logical end to the big dumb booster argument, making a rocket so large that certain materials handling issues become easier. Namely, using submarine pressure hull manufacturing techniques on half inch thick steel plates formed into a cylindrical tank body. You build this in a shipyard, not a clean room hangar. Due to size, sea transport and launh is must, but that ends up making a lot of other things easier. Leviathan neatly sidesteps one of the issues with Sea Dragon; the second stage expandable nozzle skirt. Aerospikes get almost equivalent performance for less complexity and risk. Reusuability is easier at this size, and sets the ground for SSTO.

Smart idea of using oversize concrete anchors that contain concrete pressure spheres to anchor floating offshore wind turbine arrays, using array surplus power to run (what has to be positive displacement) pumps to pump out water from within the sphere into the open ocean. Run the pump in reverse to generate power. Deals with a number of interesting issues in a clever way, such as a CAES setup causing excess buoyancy, and necessary mass for the anchors. I wonder if you can modify the bottom to be a suction anchor as well?

Interesting use of recyclable hydroxides to reform biomass or coal/methane into hydrogen in one step at low temperatures with high hydrogen purity and no CO or CO2 production. Though if you want the CO or CO2, you can heat the resulting carbonate output (recaustication like at paper mills) to recover a relatively pure gas stream and recover the hydroxide for recycling back into the process inputs.

Nuclear combustion combined cycle (NCCC) setup is interesting. Use a high temperature reactor with molten salt coolant loop to provide more heat than methane autoignition temperature (630C), slip a molten salt heat exchanger after the compressor but before the combustor of an open air cycle gas turbine combined cycle rig. Run on exclusively reactor heat normally, but pump in methane for peaking. May need a HRSG bypass when not peaking unless you treat the HRSG heat exchanger as a feedwater heater to the primary steam plant of the reactor. Step this up a bit with integrated ASU for oxyfuel ops, a post HRSG exhaust gas heat exchanger to preheat post compressor oxygen before hitting the molten salt exchanger, and flush stored ASU LN2 through an air turbine and pipe the cold exhaust through the steam condenser stack. Similar to the old ANP indirect cycle airplane engine, which is itself an open cycle brayton turbine running on reactor heat.

Interesting concept for using airfoil pressure differential to force air through a heat exchanger embedded in the rear third of an airfoil, while having low frontal drag area. As noted in the PDF, for vehicle applications there will still be a need for an auxiliary fan when stopped, which likely means the airfoil will still be in the engine bay or embedded in the hood to utilize the forced air fan.

Neat trick of using a two layer optimized blanket to reduce the amount of accelerator input power required for a accelerator driven subcritical reactor, though how practical it would be is up for debate. Admittedly, this is more oriented for transmutation/actinides burning. For power, you might end up with an inner blanket, lead-bismuth coolant, and a separation/heat exchanger vessel for the main liquid fuel (like a LFTR), and finally an outer heat exchanger from lead to steam (though I would rather use supercritical CO2). There may be an advantage to going to a liquid blanket as well.

I don't understand why this is inherently superior to a precessing 90 degree polar orbit wide enough to be larger than the sun radio occult shadow cone, other than maybe fixed position as a statite. You could do stupid aerobraking tricks (or even regular propulsion) on capture to go from a hohmann transfer to a polar orbit (which would require three satellites, but in theory offers better reliability). Shades of the interplanetary superhighway (invariant manifold) technique of riding gravitational curves...

This hurts my head because, in a way, this is so simple and awesome. Use a specialized/tweaked hashing algorithm to generate the actual hard disk location of the cached webpage (hash the URL into a filepath for example). Skips the index lookup stage so obviates the need for a web cache index. I wonder if you can do filesystem tricks like altering the create time to match the web server's file age response, so that doing a cache file age check is a compare.

Idea here is to use near consumer grade (500W) cheap power supplies with fast response factors, coupled with aggressive OS sleep software (and maybe SSD's to cut back on the response start lag of spinning disks), to create server arrays that can shed power load to follow computational demand load. Easier to turn off single power supplies working in an array set to cut power than to tweak a single big monolithic power supply.
