If you can take out the backing metal foil of a PV panel, then line the bottom with a narrow band IR re-emitter that converts rooftop heat to a band that can escape out of the atmospheric IR window, allows roof cooling and power generation simultaneously in theory.

Magnetic quantum ratchet effect in graphene : Nature Nanotechnology : Nature Publishing Group
Interesting research, basically making a magnetic quantum ratchet out of graphene, effectively making an AC/DC rectifier. But, they used a 7 tesla mag field and a 3.34THz AC input (between IR and microwave), so not entirely practical. But, infrared nanoantennas have a need for rectifying their AC output and they are currently manufactured in the IR range, so if you can somehow provide the necessary mag field, that might be the trick to make it work...

This seems to use the same kind of tricks as those luminescent solar concentrator plates, that internally reflect captured light and convert the frequency internally to retransmit to edge PV modules. Just shifting down to IR. The interesting bit is the prevention of reradiation through the top surface, which provides the potential for solar thermal power generation without concentrating mirrors using not well aligned surfaces of panels manufactured using chip fabrication techniques.

Interesting research on creating the opposite of a laser, a sort of antilaser. A loss medium basically disrupts a laser, which had been amplified in a gain medium. Demo is near IR. Hoping for slightly more broadband sources. Could be used for laser heat absorbers as a thermal laser receiver in remote power beaming applications...
