5.6 μm quantum cascade lasers based on a two-material active region composition ...
new quantum cascade,lasers, using a more manufacturable 2 material composition rather than a more exotic 5 material composition. IR tunable, runs at room temperatures, but pulsed though (but looks amenable to continuous wave operation)

Coherent Perfect Absorbers
Interesting research on creating the opposite of a laser, a sort of antilaser. A loss medium basically disrupts a laser, which had been amplified in a gain medium. Demo is near IR. Hoping for slightly more broadband sources. Could be used for laser heat absorbers as a thermal laser receiver in remote power beaming applications...

Interesting concept for an SPS using a thin film solar cell array operating as a spin stabilized panel, similar to a solar sail. Uses IR power transmission, probably laser based. Unfortunately, the setup for the laser is not ideal, as it would have to have the laser at the rotating center, requiring either a big central power yoke/gymbal with slip ring, or fixed lasers near the center with active beam steering. Actually fixed lasers with that recently developed polarized grating liquid crystal laser beam steering mechanism might work well here since it's solid state.
