using boiling hydrogen peroxide, these researchers reduced/compressed wood by removing the lignin, making an engineered wood with interesting properties, such as high strength. The kicker is that the white material is also a narrowband IR emitter tuned to dump heat to space through the atmospheric windows, so it can cool you in broad daylight.

Basically stripping lignin from trees to make an aligned fiber channel nannocellulose nanowood material, with anisotropic insulation properties. This spinout is marketing the stuff. Weird uses include blackening a top surface of an aligned block and floating it on a water surface, as a concentrated solar power receiver to make steam by capillary action through the aligned fibers.

Nice research into near massless plasma shell reentry heat shields. No mention of how the RMF is made though, though there was talk of needing a superconducting loop in the past.

Potentially usable for inflatable heatshield balloon/ballute covers, possibly as part of the integrated skin itself. Also, since it's flexible, it may be a useful material for integration into flexible cryogenic tanks, for use as prepacked collapsible tanks for an orbital fuel depot.
