Tor at the Heart: Tahoe-LAFS | The Tor Blog
Now over tor hidden services you can run a distributed encrypted storage service, such that storage nodes can run unaware of their contents, and the nodes are marginally harder to destroy due to onion routing. So FreeNet is back, in a way, with many of the same performance penalties? I bet the journalists/whistleblowers/pedos will be delighted...

Gravity Battery Concept
The major costs driver is the cost of drilling the holes and lining them. A thinner tube is cheaper, but requires a longer tube. Oil drilling technology has really come along, so this is easier. Cast concrete slugs seem to be the cheapest mass.

Electricity and Power Storage - Ares North America
Someone is finally getting around to implementing heavy electric trains on long grades as a gird energy storage system. Though admittedly the current system is smaller scale and for load leveling a wind power plant, and using narrow gauge rail along with a third rail in rural settings seems like a poor choice in the long term. Concept is sound, but having individual motor/generator cars is an interesting compromise. As long as the primary weight can be provided by cheap gravel, I suppose it doesn't matter.

Govt aims to triple wind power : Business : DAILY YOMIURI ONLINE (The Daily Yomiuri)
Oh that's sleazy, forcing the wind power generators to basically underwrite half the cost of the transmission system upgrades to send power south from the cold windy northern prefectures that the local utilities and conventional power producers were totally unwilling to put up with the cost of putting in such transmission networks themselves. The interesting takeaway is the planned grid energy storage at major substations to even out wind power production. Sine the wind companies are forced to make their own independent transmission networks, I wonder if they will charge penalty fees on the local utilities to use the network, since they forced the capex onto the wind companies.

Public entity eyed for power supply : Business : DAILY YOMIURI ONLINE (The Daily Yomiuri)
So the government is using the opportunity to pimp slap TEPCO into allowing a power grid ISO. Still kinda daft to have two ISO's for the 50/60Hz split, but understandable since the transfer limit across the divide is so low. Which might change if Son gets his way with his offshore HVDC grid intertie, which having an ISO exist would facilitate.

One Per Cent: Green Machine: Storing wind power beneath the waves
This seems to be describing an underwater CAES setup, but I though the original concept was actually a pumped hydro based concept. Basically, a strong in compression concrete sphere has a positive displacement pump/generator placed on it, and pumps water out of the sphere at depth. This emulates a pumped hydro dam/lake/reservoir but with a huge hydraulic head. With a deep underwater CAES setup, you run the risk of the sphere becoming buoyant, which kinda defeats the secondary purpose of being an offshore floating wind turbine platform's anchor. Maybe it isn't actually CAES but a simple pressure regulation system to maintain minimum pressure to prevent excess vapor formation (and the risk of ice accumulation)?

Gee, people have been proposing an offshore HVDC grid intertie for japan for years. Why is he getting so much credit? Real balls is proposing interties to russia and korea up front rather than "later as part of a pan-asia supergrid". Also, needs to take some pointers from the guys at the other end of the supergrid, namely DESERTEC-australia.

So Son's saying what a lot of people have been talking about for a long time now, but he makes for a good spokesman. 4GW offshore HVDC supergrid intertie in the sea of japan, pan-asia links similar to DESERTEC, independent ISO/TSO to break the stranghold of regional oligopolies in japan and have fair feed-in tariff structures without wasted energy. No calls for grid energy storage though, though if a true supergrid is operating, it can be reduced or eliminated if the timezone spread is far enough. Also trotting out the national energy security horse too.

Energy Storage System Deals With Sudden Draws On The Grid
Interesting grid peak shaving technique suited to natural gas turbine plants. Use offpeak excess baseload to power an air separation plant to collect liquid nitrogen and (?liquid) oxygen. When the peak comes, boil the nitrogen using atmospheric heat and waste heat, then run through a (probably aeroderivative) simple expansion turbine. Additionally, the collected oxygen is used with natural gas in a conventional gas turbine in oxyfuel mode for clean emissions (and waste heat probably going through a steam generator, and possibly the nitrogen turbine exhaust being used on the steam generator condenser?). They claim good efficiency, probably since the liquid oxygen boiling would provide the needed pressure for the combustor without a conventional compressor (or if push comes to shove, use the nitrogen turbine to precompress the gaseous oxygen), and the energy density may not be shabby overall. Interesting twist to the cold (well, more like a heatsink) thermal energy storage trick.
