Gravity Battery Concept
The major costs driver is the cost of drilling the holes and lining them. A thinner tube is cheaper, but requires a longer tube. Oil drilling technology has really come along, so this is easier. Cast concrete slugs seem to be the cheapest mass.

Electricity and Power Storage - Ares North America
Someone is finally getting around to implementing heavy electric trains on long grades as a gird energy storage system. Though admittedly the current system is smaller scale and for load leveling a wind power plant, and using narrow gauge rail along with a third rail in rural settings seems like a poor choice in the long term. Concept is sound, but having individual motor/generator cars is an interesting compromise. As long as the primary weight can be provided by cheap gravel, I suppose it doesn't matter.

Hydraulic Hydro Storage: The Optimal Energy Storage System
Interesting take on pumped hydro, using a giant solid stone piston for the compression mass, cut using an upper and lower ring tunnel connected by a wire saw. So basically an excavate in place scheme for a high mass, rather than say Gravity Power, which uses a vertical TBM and an artificial (concrete?) piston. Still uses water as the working fluid, no indication if this is closed loop. Some of the drawings even show the piston cut from the ground surface, which means as you store energy, this giant cylinder rock mass rises from the ground like a mountain...

Gravity Power Grid-Scale Electricity Storage System
Basically uses a closed loop of a large and small bore vertical silos linked together, with a huge weighted piston in the large bore, and reversible turbines at the surface level to complete the loop. Sane if the drilling of the large bore doesn't cost a fortune. Prefer to do it in a seismically inactive area unless you can figure out how to keep the bore from collapsing in an earthquake. Since it's closed loop, head pressure is not the defining characteristic, rather the bore depth determines the drop time like a gravity clock. The trick is the raw bore depth head pressure isn't the driving force, rather the weight block's applied pressure. There is the potential to even do this offshore using floating pipes anchored to the bottom.

That hole in the indian ocean sure is mighty suspicious. But the definition of the meaning of the "below geoid" level isn't clear to me. Does that mean the hole in the indian ocean is not a gravity dense area?
