MarineBiomass – The official home of Marine Bio Energy
Interesting work on offshore artificial kelp forests. Apparently will use depth cycling setups where the kelp is brought shallow during the daytime then sunk at night.

Sorta doing the equivalent of vertical farming, offshore using submerged kelp frames and shellfish racks, with the frames deep enough to avoid ships?

MarineBiomass – The official home of Marine Bio Energy
Uh using variable depth buoy/submarine setups seems a bit overkill, could achieve most of the same result with a long pipe for a local deep ocean upwelling to bring the necessary nutrients to the surface. But open ocean kelp farming is an interesting concept itself.

Apparently they sell a shovel designed around female specific ergonomics (women tend to use more lower body strength and other limb movement techniques)

Sky Green - Technology
Odd vertical farming layout hardware. Basically uses a continuous chain loop/ferris wheel to carry troughs up a vertical distance. So at first glance, probably not hydroponic compatible. Also, seems to focus on leafy plants, and the troughs may be shaded for half a transit on the loop. Still interesting. Apparently in commercial use in Singapore.

New shrimp technology could speed up race to feed the world
Interesting, but this is largely shifting energy inputs for perceived production gains. This makes it look like a compact indoor shrimp production facility, with only electricity and fishmeal inputs, produces more. But where does the fishmeal come from, how was it made? Doing true cost analysis compared to traditional inland open pond shrimp farming using pond based algae as food for the shrimp, I wonder if it really is coming out ahead, and is not simply a tradeoff of greater energy expenditure to achieve greater density of end product production.

Open Source Ecology Weblog
Basically, trying to build prototype tools/equipment for low cost modern agriculture with open source designs, to lower the barriers to modern agriculture, enable small groups of modern humans to sustainably live off the land, and to provide new innovation to third world farmers that they can conceivably build themselves with only guidance/blueprints.

The idea of using "used" shipping containers is interesting, especially if you had a hangar style warehouse space with a container crane and "docks" to mate the containers to power/water/chemical/cooling umbilicals. Have the container crane bring the container to the front for harvesting, reload, then set back into the racks. Instead of the farmer going to the vegetables, make the vegetables come to the farmer?

More cases of asian countries heading to africa for resources not available locally. Though Daewoo getting burned publicly like this probably hides many other follies, and a great many more successes. Wasn't china getting big in mineral resource recovery recently?
