using boiling hydrogen peroxide, these researchers reduced/compressed wood by removing the lignin, making an engineered wood with interesting properties, such as high strength. The kicker is that the white material is also a narrowband IR emitter tuned to dump heat to space through the atmospheric windows, so it can cool you in broad daylight.

Hollow Spheres
These guys are working on innovative ceramic hollow spheres for use in armor applications. One type is just spheres packed onto a backing plate, providing limited flex. The next type is packing spheres into woven tubes of kevlar, creating lumpy bead strings that can be assembled into a flexible armor. Final type is a hex tile module with a limited play interface, allowing small flexibility and easy customization for large area vehicle armor.

Combining a pebble thermal energy store for thermal energy recovery with tunneled underground air cavities for CAES. Possible boost of the thermal store with CPV or CSP systems. Maybe using vertically bored tunnels as well? Are they stuffing the air cavities with pebbles for thermal storage too?

Lightweight nickel lattice structure. They claim it is the lightest material currently known. Structure should be possible with other materials. Uses semiconductor lithography techniques to make a polymer template, plate the template, then etch the polymer away.
