Nuclear Propulsion Along Inland Waterways
This is actually an argument in favor of mobile thermal batteries with their heat engines, and a recharging infrastructure (which preferably uses small nuclear heat sources). Fireless steam locomotives are still in use in select industries that use a large steam vessel recharged by an external steam source, but newer thermal batteries could improve on things.

Hollow concrete sphere anchors for floating wind turbines do double duty, anchor the turbine, and serving as an energy storage subsystem by pumping water out of the sphere at depth. 30m sphere stores roughly 6MWhr, sweet spot is 750m depth, economically viable at 400m, works at 200m in a pinch, 1500m is pushing it (stress fracture implosion of the vapor head inside would be fierce).

Nice part of this is that it basically is a submerged buoy actuated seawater pump, sending high pressure seawater ashore to a turbine station on land, keeping the electrical bits dry. Water pressure can be used directly for desalination as well.

So Son's saying what a lot of people have been talking about for a long time now, but he makes for a good spokesman. 4GW offshore HVDC supergrid intertie in the sea of japan, pan-asia links similar to DESERTEC, independent ISO/TSO to break the stranghold of regional oligopolies in japan and have fair feed-in tariff structures without wasted energy. No calls for grid energy storage though, though if a true supergrid is operating, it can be reduced or eliminated if the timezone spread is far enough. Also trotting out the national energy security horse too.

Key point is some kind of distributed drivetrain setup, where you have large torque delivered via a huge wheel, and multiple takeoff/off-take drives drawing torque power off the big wheel. Each individual takeoff drive runs a generator of smaller size, so you don't have to deal with the expense of trying to build a larger monolithic unit, in theory.

Interesting quiet generator for smallish yachts. 800W, but near silent and has decent fuel efficiency, but a major aim is CHP applications, since it provides enough heat that you might be able to run an adsorption cooler for the refrigerator/freezer rather than an electric compressor, and the heat is also applicable for hot water and radiant heating, which is nice in colder climates.

Vertiwind aims to cut costs by using a low center of gravity VAWT, which in theory cuts down on the structure and mass of the buoy/floating structure to support the wind turbine. If you are forced to have semisubmersible styled platform to support a wind turbine, the beam of a VAWT can be reasonably compensated by the platform beam already. If it was supposed to be a spar buoy platform, you may be forced to position the VAWT higher to counteract motion to keep the sweep radius of the blades above wave height when tilted.

Lloyd's and Hyperion Power Systems are teaming up to do dev work regarding modern shipping using small modular nuclear reactors as powerplants/engines/steam generators for large ships with a defined high speed need. There was some interesting work recently that a three ship fleet with nuclear power for the transpacific container cargo transport market could seriously beat a 4 ship fuel oil powered fleet on a profit and tons/day or tons/mile basis.

Now here's a potentially smart idea, a hybrid wind turbine tower/seawater water tower with the object of reusing the wind turbine tower's volume and height as a pumped hydro storage reservoir (much like a municipal water tank tower). The kicker is instead of electric pumps/turbines filling the tank, use wave buoy pumps to use wave power for primary tank filling. Though, to be honest, if one were committing to doing a pumped hydro intermediary energy storage system for load leveling, there may be merit in having an auxilliary electric pump driven by the wind turbine, or skipping that step and figuring out a way to direct drive a pump mechanically from the wind turbine (hydraulic remote transmission assembly, or possibly a driveshaft, or a driveshaft going to a combiner transmission connected to the water turbine generator), so you have only one electric generator, near sea level. Note this scheme only works for monopiles and gravity bases, not offshore floaters.

Hrm, as a general rule, is running a direct drive or belt drive alternator better or worse than using an alternator generator colocated on the turbocharger shaft? I suppose a marine diesel has power enough to spare to get away with it, but what about cars and trucks? There was that hybrid turbocharger for cars a little while back, but that was to get over turbo boost lag, and wasn't intended to be a primary power generator alternator...

GREEN MOTION: electric, fossil free, marine drive, and propulsion system
Basically a motor/generator electric prop drive. On a multihull, you can potentially sail fast enough to generate a fair amount of power (3KW recovered at 8 knots from a 10KW rated drive). Coupled with a diesel generator, good batteries, and solar panels, you can go almost fuel free.

Japanese startup with a pilot project for water current turbines, typically ocean tidal currents in straits and harbor mouths or other major currents. The individual turbines themselves are interesting, but since this seems to be dependent on a upstream pivot pole, I have doubts about the hydrodynamic efficiency due to vortex eddies off the pole/shaft/blade and it being a drag type turbine. I wonder if you could trail this off the Deep Green underwater kite tether near the end, to up the power output? Though would you need counter rotating blades to balance the torque?
