TransActive Grid | Secure, transactional control of utility systems
Using blockchain ledgers to facilitate energy credit microtransactions between local neighborhood power producers and consumers. Not entirely crazy, in the sense that you are offloading net metering payment ops to a consumer distributed system. Doesn't necessarily solve the problem of power distribution control information sharing in a net metering environment though.

Cultivation of an Obligate Fe(II)-Oxidizing Lithoautotrophic Bacterium Using Electrodes
Looks like they got rust making bacteria to live without iron, by simply supplying them electricity (electron substitute for iron oxides) and their regular diet of CO2. Which means you now have the basic foundation for a synthetic biofuel production system with electricity and CO2 inputs, provided you can tweak the bacteria to output biofuels directly like alcohols or oils, to be skimmed from a vat.

Nanoscale Triboelectric-Effect-Enabled Energy Conversion for Sustainably Powering Portable Electronics - Nano Letters (ACS Publications)
Basically, this is a squeezing based power generator, on the small scale (nanogenerator). Possibly very well adapted to immediate connection with nearby/embedded capacitors to collect energy as a first stage, before transferring to long term larger storage.

Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 126806 (2012): Cloaking Core-Shell Nanoparticles from Conducting Electrons in Solids
Could this potentially be used as a high temperature superconductor alternative (or at least a super high conductivity material with very low resistance), since if you trick the electrons into believing that there is nothing hindering them, there might be no resistance?

RIKEN | Press Release | 2012 | A New Route to Dissipationless Electronics
Interesting work on a actual magnetic topological insulator. In theory this should allow reductions in line transmission losses. But this needs magnetic materials, and currently requires cryogenic cooling, so on the face of it, it isn't much better than current high temperature superconductors. Might be more applicable to chip scale stuff, especially if they can get the working temperature up.

WiTricity Corp. Home — Wireless Electricity Delivered Over Distance
Apparently this uses magnetic resonance coupling tunnels to literally run a stream/string of power from the pad to the receiver, obviating the need for direct proximity and alignment (Qi I think does require alignment/proximity since it uses magnetic induction).

Small-scale waterwheel hydropower generating buzz across Japan - The Mainichi Daily News
Considering most "rivers" and "brooks" are concrete ditches in japan, it's not that big of a deal to put in a small waterwheel for auxiliary power. I think the trick would be to design in energy storage at the waterwheel to be released during the daytime, if the water wheels are located in more rural areas. Possibly a simpler route to test early distributed grid generation capacity?

Official Google Blog: The wind cries transmission
The other shoe drops regarding Google being a power broker. This offshore long distance transmission line network kills two birds with one stone; power leveling wind turbine output by averaging over a large geographic area, and new long distance transmission capacity with little to no NIMBY blockage (because it's very difficult to block what people can't see and is beyond the 12 mile limit) carrying power from southern US power producers (which includes the new nuclear reactors in Georgia). No other major power broker can probably bring online such large north-south transmission capacity using existing rights-of-way, and will likely have to either buy into the project at a disadvantage, or end up getting screwed by Google later in the power spot markets.

Intel's experimental sensor analyzes appliance power consumption from single outlet -- Engadget
Interesting concept from intel for remote power consumption measurement of devices. Fixes the chicken-and-egg problem of needing smarthome/smartmeter/smartgrid compatible appliances that can directly report consumption to be able to measure granular energy consumption in a home. It still won't provide true remote control (smarthome may be able to shut down individual outlets as a broad measure), but it's a decent way to retrofit existing homes and appliances. Though Intel or somebody is going to make simple inline smarthome compatible power controllers for appliances at prices that manufacturers will live with (assuming there isn't a government mandate forcing the integration) eventually...
