If the shifting via sliding the bearing assembly up and down the drive shaft works without too much of a penalty, this might be interesting. But like most shaft drives, this would be difficult to retrofit, and probably needs a custom frame.

Some sort of new charger, uses tricks internally to convert AC to DC at higher efficiency in a smaller package. Uses some sort of frequency multiplier to reduce the size of inductors and capacitors (some kind of VHF switching inverter?), and using air core inductors and transformers can cut down on size and weight.

Improving the light-harvesting of amorphous silicon solar cells with photochemical upconversion - Energy & Environmental Science (RSC Publishing)
New trick for solar cells, upconverting red/IR photons that are not captured in a PV cell and pass through by combining two photons and turning it into a single yellow photon, and sending that back into the solar cell for capture. Kind of like a frequency doubler crystal. But this seems to be a reflector architecture of sorts, so that means the red/IR that passed though probably heated the solar cell already before it even reaches the upconverter reflector, as opposed to a frequency doubler crystal which is on the front end usually.

Apparently, these guys were already working on using microbubbles to improves algae density in production. Now, they have retasked the same tech to help with floatation/separation/harvesting to ease gathering and drying, which is somewhat energy intensive normally. Naturally this assumes algae for biofuel where you are using the biomass directly (thus killing the algae), rather than using algae types the excrete oils that can be skimmed (and keep the algae alive).

It would be nice to make this stick, but japanese have some truly strange behavior regarding building HVAC. In particular, there is the concept of "changing the air" where they will open the windows full bore, regardless of the outside weather. The other bad behavior is the near zero understanding of central HVAC, causing them to run heaters or air conditioners full bore whenever they enter a room to work/spend time in, then turn it off when they leave. Though this needs to be tempered by the fact that traditional japanese homes were poorly insulated, so there was no merit to running HVAC constantly since it was a losing battle.

Direct full server mineral oil immersion cooling is now possible with appropriate power supplies and SSD hard disks (rotating hard disks are actually air breathing). These guys are packing it as a 42U rack lying on it's back to allow easier single server removal, though frankly that would make a hell of a mess and it would be better to go with monolithic sealed units that fail in place...

Ecomotors Opposed-Piston Opposed-Cylinder Engine Could make Class 8 Trucks 45% More Fuel Efficient
Interesting opposed piston engine concept. Each opposed piston cylinder set/module consists of pairs of inner and outer pistons. By putting the inlet and exhaust ports at opposite ends of the cylinder, you get better fuel burn, and potentially easier valve systems. Opposed setups get some nice balance going, and because it is "flat" engine you could potentially put it under the floor/bed of a vehicle rather than in the front, for better weight balance (provided you are using all wheel electric drive, which is not unreasonable since this engine concept uses an electric turbo/supercharger so you will in principle need a large generator/alternator attached to the driveshaft anyways). I wonder what would stop you from using a concept like this for a diesel cycle, since it is functionally a two stroke based cycle?

Interesting continuing research into the somewhat obvious ploy of using a optical spectrum splitter to separate light frequencies and send to them frequency optimized discrete solar cells, as a way to surmount the materials science problems of making stacked multijunction multispectrum optimized solar cells. If the light from the primary concentrator is being split by frequency, I wonder if you could do the trick of sending specific light bands left/right/down by using a double prism block? There is the overriding question of whether it would be cheaper to do the beam slitting before or after the concentrator?

He's suggesting a multimedia conferencing solution to improve communication. Which makes sense, considering there is the analog of the academic conference seminar with matching IRC room where attendees discuss and lampoon the speaker. I wonder if you could implement this directly via VoIP services? SIP (or should I say SIMPLE) in theory supports a form of inline chatting, provided the end client supports it. I suppose if you were really pushing for it, force the conference participants to use SIP clients exclusively, cutting out those expensive analog teleconference support services since all the audio is VoIP.

Idea here is to use near consumer grade (500W) cheap power supplies with fast response factors, coupled with aggressive OS sleep software (and maybe SSD's to cut back on the response start lag of spinning disks), to create server arrays that can shed power load to follow computational demand load. Easier to turn off single power supplies working in an array set to cut power than to tweak a single big monolithic power supply.
