Ceramic–metal composites for heat exchangers in concentrated solar power plants | Nature
New hybrid ceramic for use in heat exchangers. Start with a titanium carbide porous block, immerse in a copper and zirconium bath. The zirconium infiltrates the ceramic and displaces titanium in the carbide, while the titanium migrates into the open pores. Copper ends up being a thin film sealant.

Bonding-induced thermal conductance enhancement at inorganic heterointerfaces using nanomolecular monolayers : Nature Materials : Nature Publishing Group
Basically a form of phonon impedance fuzzing, by sticking an intermediate material (the nanolayer monolayer) that has intermediate phonon properties, to allow transmission of the phonon across the change in materials, when they would otherwise be reflected back at the materials interface. The short form is improved heat transfer from silicon CPU's to copper heatsinks, assuming you can get the thermal interface layer right. Not for amateurs.

Compact High-Temperature Superconducting Cables Demonstrated at NIST
Interesting that they have gotten over some of the manufacturing issues, by picking a HTS with a slightly higher strain capability but using it as a tape wrapping a simple copper core. Since this uses an HTS tape, it is comparatively easy to manufacture. It also seems that by using a higher strain capable HTS, they can reduce the cross section of the HTS cable for a given amperage. Now the next trick is figuring out a core former that is hollow to allow coolant to run through it.

A 'Copper Standard' for the world's currency system? - Telegraph
Now this is interesting. People had noticed in the past China's aggressive natural resource collection and mining push in Africa and elsewhere. Most people understood this as a form of economic colonialism and resource supply security. Now it appears there is a financial aspect as well, using metals commodities to try to extricate themselves from the dollar and US treasury bonds without directly causing a currency crisis and being beyond reproach by the US. The keynesian Bancor currency standard based on a 30+ commodity basket is interesting as well, especially if the commodity basket is skewed towards commodities that would fundamentally favor China.
