Insolight – Making solar energy affordable
Smart idea, using microlens plastic plate over CPV solar cells in a grid pattern under the plate, then shift the plate a little bit to track the sun. So basically you could do an artificial muscle actuator or MEMS to shift the plate, rather than some gigantic tracking heliograph CPV setup. Plate shift still limits tracking angles, but the cost is much cheaper.

Steam from the sun
So at 10x solar concentration, the surface cover composite sheet composed of the graphite flake thermal absorber/boiler coupled to an underlying buoyant porous carbon air foam, creates steam pretty well. I assume the insulating factor of the carbon air foam reflects more heat into the boiler region to improve efficiency, rather than letting heat travel through and warm the bulk water.

Black Sun Planetary Solutions
Interesting collector design, based on on a blackbody cavity concept. Reduces costs since it doesn't use a vacuum tube receiver core, along with a low precision tolerant mirror reflector geometry. Seems to still require single axis tracking though, but 10 degrees is a lot easier to implement via ratchet mechanisms rather than continuous jackscrews.

Claiming a low cost double reflector mirror arrangement lets these guys do high concentration levels. Doesn't really solve the tracking problem, at first glance, but the same plastic shape trick could be used with a trough collector. Interesting that they use a clear plastic cover lens, but what about age or dust related degradation?

Oddball mix of inflatable mirror/lens assembly mounted on a lightweight fiber reinforced concrete frame. Essentially makes a closed, slightly pressurized container for the energy production components, to protect them from rain and air contamination. Though the ETFE film getting discolored due to age/exposure reducing power output might be a problem. The collector is universal, in the sense that the central core receiver can be either the CSP type using pressurized air for the heat transfer fluid (which nominally gets dumped through a gravel tank for heat storage), or a water cooled CPV receiver. Recently did work with IBM using IBM chip semiconductor manufacturing techniques to make CPV water cooled solar cell panels with integrated cooling in the silicon.via microchannels.

Interesting use of extremely small solar cells with concentrating optics. They claim they can run without heat fins for thermal management, but I have my doubts. Also claiming wide acceptance angles, but which might be true due to the optical geometry of the concentrators. The microprint transfer system allows wafer reuse, which is interesting...

This seems to use the same kind of tricks as those luminescent solar concentrator plates, that internally reflect captured light and convert the frequency internally to retransmit to edge PV modules. Just shifting down to IR. The interesting bit is the prevention of reradiation through the top surface, which provides the potential for solar thermal power generation without concentrating mirrors using not well aligned surfaces of panels manufactured using chip fabrication techniques.

Interesting PVT type hybrid PV/thermal concentrating solar power generator. They are using packing tricks to slot in electronics and other hardware in the gap spaces between concentrator prisms. Still needs an active tracker though.

GE Combines Natural Gas, Wind, and Solar - Technology Review
So the idea is colocate a wind turbine array in the solar thermal heliostat field, and use the solar thermal heat to boost the steam turbine in a natural gas combined cycle rig. No mention of thermal heat storage from the solar thermal system, but considering the gas turbine can operate in peaking mode, there's less of an incentive to do so. The gas turbine also can do some load following moves to buffer the wind turbine output to take care of the wind power variability issue. It appears to spec for dry cooling the steam turbine. The core concept of a heavily integrated multisource powerplant is intriguing, and does cut the cost of some equipment (mainly steam turbines/generators, and transformers, and controls). However, if the integration is too high, then later expansions or uprates will unbalance the optimizations, potentially to the point that it may not be worth the costs.

Interesting take on on concentrating solar PV. Covers chip cooling and transmission lines in one stroke by using hydroelectric dam reservoirs. It may be possible to line some of the open space in the frame to work as a partial water barrier, to reduce evaporative losses for dams in hot/dry climates.

I'm having a little trouble figuring out how they can get over the traditional Betz limit, since they do substantial direction shifting of the massflow through the concentrator intake tower. The advantage of having the turbine on the ground could be similarly done with a traditional wind turbine connected via a mechanical or hydraulic transmission to a ground generator though.

Enel Inaugerates Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage System for Archimede Solar Thermal Power Plant « Solar Thermal Magazine
Apparently this is a parabolic trough type solar thermal plant with molten salt in the collector tubes, which is a first apparently. I wonder how they keep the salt from freezing in the tubes at night? Do they drain it, or accept the losses associated with keeping it molten directly in the tube at night? They mention a combined cycle plant, so maybe they vampire heat from the plant to keep the salt hot?

Solar Thermal Electrochemical Photo (STEP) Carbon Capture could Reduce Atmospheric CO2 to Pre-industrial Levels in Ten Years
Using an externally electrically driven molten lithium carbonate cell to crack CO2 down to C or CO, CO being fed into synthetic fuel processes, C for solid state long term sequestration/storage or as nanotube feedstock. Uses Solar CPV with thermal recovery to heat the cells and drive them electrically. Absolutely no mention of how the CO2 would be captured for input into the electrolysis cell (basically the same as a MSFC fuelcell, only without the hydrogen fuel) though.

I guess the plan is to use SES stirling engines to do cooling/energy recovery on the backside of the XR700 panels, as a mixed hybrid two stage direct electric and heat engine electric system? The XR700 doesn't seem to use a reflector concentrator like SES systems do, so the stirling engine has to be back mounted...

Interesting continuing research into the somewhat obvious ploy of using a optical spectrum splitter to separate light frequencies and send to them frequency optimized discrete solar cells, as a way to surmount the materials science problems of making stacked multijunction multispectrum optimized solar cells. If the light from the primary concentrator is being split by frequency, I wonder if you could do the trick of sending specific light bands left/right/down by using a double prism block? There is the overriding question of whether it would be cheaper to do the beam slitting before or after the concentrator?
