Using a wave buoy based pump to compress air for a UWCAES setup. Problem is the heat loss (since it would be hard to recover), means you lose a lot of efficiency in the CAES system. I suppose they eat the loss, since the primary power source is renewable wave energy, rather than a grid input.

Interesting papers (6520 and 6554) about a hybrid nuclear/combustion gas turbine plant, Using a helium gas brayton cycle turbine to run a decoupled air compressor for a linked coal gasification syngas powered combustion turbine (with likely combined cycle steam plant which could also be linked with the nuclear side of the plant). Also talking about integrated process heat and synfuel production. Natural gas carrot to try to get nuclear synfuel production capabilities? There is some CAES talk since the air compressor is decoupled which would allow storage, and nuclear heat is available for air reheat when releasing from storage.

Interesting use of water to both keep the compression isothermal, and to store heat for later when expanding to keep the expansion cycle isothermal. But they are advocating using compressed air tankage (gas cyclinder) rather than salt domes, so there is a high capital cost of tanks issue that needs to be addressed. Hrm, this ends up being similar to the Energy Bag guys, since they would use seawater to both release and recover heat via heat exchanger/recuperator. But if you are getting worked up over heat recovery, why not go for hotter compression cycles and store the heat as a molten salt?

If I understand this correctly, I think they are simply using concentrated solar thermal energy as a substitue for the fuel and combustor assembly in a gas turbine, taking some pressure losses and reduced efficiency in exchange for a dry plant (no heat recovery steam generator turbine). But to be truely dry requires a once through system like a gas turbine, so you take some bad hits on efficiency. Also solar, so unless you use a thermal store (molten salt) to cover nighttime generation you have to shutdown at sundown. If you had the molten salt thermal store to capture some compression heat, then a CAES storage system might be possible, but I imagine that wouldn't be attractive for a scenario like this.
