yahoo/CaffeOnSpark
Yahoo built a frankenstein framework to support frankenstein hadoop clusters, with a custom MPI over RDMA protocol, infiniband interconnects, and Yarn scheduling SPark and other Deep Learning workloads. The smart approach is an integrated single cluster, so deep learning workloads stay in cluster, but can migrate between GPU and CPU stages.

HybridCluster
Containerizing ZFS for real cloud portability and failover. Basically link ZFS capabilities into Docker management. Snapshot/rollback are ZFS snapshot operations. Same with cloning. Real distributed cloud ops by sending Docker containers to other servers via ZFS send.

Drawn to Scale
An SQL frontend and distributed cluster management/deployment platform utilizing Chef for Hadoop, called Spire, using MapR for the distributed filesystem. Big Data speeds for people who don't want to get their hand dirty with hadoop and writing raw MapReduce jobs, or have too much of an investment in classical SQL legacy systems.

Qubole
Abstraction layer service that optimizes using hadoop on AWS with S3 stored datasets. Uses actual EC2 instance clusters specific to your job, rather than Elastic MapReduce. Now also has Presto, an SQL interface opensourced by Facebook for querying hadoop data directly.

engraph - 新感覚ソーシャル電話帳アプリ
Cooked up by a high school kid, this smartphone app is an attempt to break out of the traditional contact list format, and to show groupings of friends/contacts by entity, and focusing on an entity shows a contact's various communication paths (email, facebook, twitter,etc.). Beta android app available, iPhone and desktop versions coming along later.

HP Project Moonshot hurls ARM servers into the heavens • The Register
Interesting talk here, including the practical limit of 4000 Hadoop nodes (32bit address issue), and rigging this up with 4GB of RAM per node (general limit for a 32bit processor not using PAE). The rules will change when those 64bit ARM chips come out though.

China mobile OS takes aim at smartphone giants | News | PC Pro
Alibaba's take on the hybrid hetereogenous cluster model for cell phones, offloading the heavy work to the server. They seem to want to push almost everything to the server, but until cellphone network coverage is good enough to cover no/low bandwidth zones, I don't think that's viable since that approaches a full thin client model. NTT's hybrid thin client model with synced low/high power android OS pairs keeps a viable local OS and apps while still pushing the big work to the cloud.
