Identification of the mechanism responsible for the boron oxygen light induced degradation in silicon photovoltaic cells: Journal of Applied Physics: Vol 125, No 18
PV solar cell degradation actually has a previously unseen mechanism, which has now been identified. It appears the solution to "repair" degraded solar panels (increase effective lifetime) is to heat them in the dark for a few minutes at 200C, but that only resets the lifetime and doesn't prevent degradation? Unfortunately, wire solder melts at below 200C, so you can't just bake an old panel in your home oven to fix it or the interconnects will dribble out.

New Coal Technology Harnesses Energy Without Burning, Nears Pilot-Scale Development
Interesting chemical loop method to bypass direct combustion of coal or syngas. Used sealed process to strip iron oxide of oxygen with coal or syngas carbon to produce CO2 and reduced iron oxide, along with any coal dregs. The reduced iron oxide is brought outside of the chemical reactor and exposed to air, which causes it to heat up exothermically as it reacquires oxygen, the heat of which can run a conventional boiler for a steam turbine power generator. Makes CO2 capture much easier, and allows isolation of slag materials for separation/vitrification, rather than sending it up as flue gases. Wonder if this could be paired with the chemical looping desalination processes proposed for high temperature nuclear reactors?
